http://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/editorials/article109081832.htmlThis newspaper has a long history of supporting U.S. Sen. Marco Rubios electoral campaigns, going back to his days as a promising political newcomer from West Miami with a strong measure of personal magnetism and a crowd-pleasing message that served him well as he climbed the political ladder. When he ran an insurgent campaign for the Senate against a sitting Republican governor in 2010, we backed him because we believed, He has the potential to be the kind of statesman Floridians can be proud to call a native son.
SNIP on Sen Rubio backing Donald Trump:
Mr. Trumps candidacy is a test of character, and Sen. Rubio is failing that test.
How can voters believe hes sincere when he says he does not share Mr. Trumps awful views on Mexicans, immigrants, Muslims, women, etc., yet at the same time stands by his endorsement of the New York billionaire? His act is unconvincing.
It reeks of political convenience rather than political conviction.
And he has refused to issue a clear, unequivocal statement on whether he will finish out his term if he wins reelection.
SNIP
What is clear, however, is that Rep. Murphy will fight for the right issues, as he stated in his debate with Sen. Rubio on Monday. He supports the diplomatic opening to Cuba, reasonable gun-control measures, the Affordable Care Act, measures to rein in climate change and Roe v. Wade as well as comprehensive immigration reform and filling the Supreme Court vacancy.
For the U.S. Senate, the Miami Herald recommends PATRICK MURPHY.

(9,148 posts)How big of a blow would this be to the FL Republican Party?
I don't think they believed Murphy to ever be a threat.
Great endorsement.

(58,785 posts)races are more winnable (NC and MO). Not everyone agrees with this action, of course, but there it is. Last I heard poll averages had Murphy only 4 points behind Rubio, an eager, amoral tool of the ultra-wealthy who really, really should be rejected by Floridians.

(15,262 posts)Polling has been rather steady for Rubio v. Murphy, and Rubio has not been able to pull away, not good for an incumbent. Murphy will benefit from winning the debate and Hillary's ground game.
The question is can we reach 55? A cushion for the next election is needed, when the advantage shifts back and we need to hold more seats.

(21,056 posts)registering to vote automatic! That will help some with keeping majorities if we fortunately get them, but we also have to find a way to encourage people to vote, as that is the just way to change things! We're not warped like the GOP who's own nominee sounds violent, and is stoking anger. I think if we can get the people to start appreciating their right to vote, we will never see a GOP majority in our lifetime, as long as they don't change their politics.
