These topics were determined by the debates moderator, Chris Wallace of Fox News. While some of them, such as immigration and the economy, have been talked about in previous debates, rarely have debt and entitlements come up during the 2016 election cycle. The national debt is currently almost $20 trillion, and both candidates proposals would increase it. According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, Hillary Clintons proposals would add $200 billion to the debt, and Donald Trumps proposals would add $5.3 trillion.
In terms of the Supreme Court, the next president will have the opportunity to appoint several Supreme Court justices, and Donald Trump consistently argues that even those who dont necessarily like him have no choice but to vote for him in order to get conservatives on the bench. Hillary Clinton says that she would only appoint judges who would overturn Citizens United v. FEC, which determined that corporations can spend however much money they want on political expenditures. Donald Trump has released a list of six potential appointments. He promises to protect the second amendment, and he and his running mate, Mike Pence, have implied that Roe v. Wade would be overturned under a Trump presidency.
Sorry if this was posted already. I couldn't find it.

(45 posts)we were assured to get real answers. I find the issue of the relationship of military spending and debt to be this giant elephant in the room that politicians systematically avoid. I would love to see Hillary show the courage to suggest we could cut military spending.

(45,806 posts)military, either active, retired, or related, sees that as cutting their pay or benefits. That's usually not the case but it takes more time than the minute or so allotted in a debate.
My son was in the Navy when BC was Prez, and he HATED HIM. I asked him shy and he said "He cut the budget and we couldn't get the money to buy parts to do our job!" I explained that his problems stemmed from his commanding officers who make the decision on where to prioritize the funds they get. The Prez doesn't reduce spending nor does he make the budget. Those things can only be done by Congress. BC DID ask Congress to cut military spending BECAUSE "We should be getting the PEACE TIME BENEFIT.
Those are the real things military people believe, much the same as the majority of voters believe the Prez has control over spending, gas prices, jobs and well...damn near everything else.

(45 posts)the topics were designed to give Trump access to his dog whistles and red meat, but I actually thought Chris Wallace did a good job and the format gave Trump less rope to hang himself, but ultimately exposed he is not in the same league as Hillary.
