Trump's family had big money when he was born! Nouveau-riche people are brand-new at being rich, and usually they have had to struggle through some big obstacles to get there. Trump doesn't have that for an excuse!

Pa Trump made his money in Noo Yawk real estate (and possibly mob connections, but who knows for sure). In any case they are not at all old money so they have no deep family traditions regarding how to shepherd the wealth.

Many accounts suggest that Trump is partly driven by an abiding need to be respected by the true old money movers and shakers, whose money is old indeed in New England, and his lifelong failure to get that respect eats away at him. Being new money Pa obviously didn't raise Donny very well, and the people who are at peace with their fortune see him for the tacky pretender he can't help being.
