There are so many ways to tinker a poll to make a race look close, so that people will keep looking at your polls and reporting the name of your poll on TV--sample size and composition, likely voter models, weighting, etc.

But none of these polls wants to make it look like they were way off base in the end, because they lose credibility. That is why I tend not to look much at polls in presidential races until the last few weeks.
