2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWho really gives a flying fuck if trump concedes or not?
He can stand at the fence and gaze longingly at our seat of Democracy all he wants. Hell- let him stand on the sidewalk and shill for his alms- as long as he has a valid permit and doesn't interfere with our President's work.
Let him fade back into the wallpaper and become an unperson. Let him become a lesson to our children. Let him be a warning to our politicians that some things come with too high a price, and they'd better start paying attention to their real jobs- that of governing our nation. It's about time they find out the men and women of America really ARE paying attention to what happens out in the real world.
I really believe we needed this to happen. We needed a resounding slap upside our collective head to force us to wake up. This seems to be something even *bush never had the power to do.
Go figure.

(2,542 posts)So while his statement about not conceding is outrageous, the fact is that his concession doesn't matter. The election is about the winner, not the loser.

(1,619 posts)After Trump loses anything he has to say on the subject will be greeted with vast howling gales of laughter.

(6,365 posts)We have a winner. We have a loser. And we move on as a single country.
When we have a winner and we have a martyr, that moving on as a single country part gets tough.
At the rate he's going, Trump t-shirts will replace the confederate flag as the symbol of what we could have achieved if we just made the white (opps - I meant right) decision. His concession is, in effect, a statement that says "I will not lead a public insurrection against the legally elected government of this country". Now that doesn't mean he doesn't do it in private or behind the scenes but at least there's some semblance of orderly transition.
I think we've taken the transition of power for granted because we have always had Americans running for office...partisans but American. With Trump, I'm pretty sure America is not his first priority and it pisses me off that he gets to run around like a bull in our proverbial china shop of democracy.
Maybe I'm just old school but that's my two cents. He'll play by whatever rules most benefit Trumpland and he'll have a "fuck the country" attitude when he does it.

(18,402 posts)It won't matter whether he concedes or not: Hillary Clinton will take the oath of office.
What we are concerned about is the aftermath with his supporters. I'm not predicting guns in the streets. But as Dan Senor (yes, him!) explained it last night on the Charlie Rose panel: there are going to be a lot of Republican Congressmen/women whose constituents are going to believe the "rigged" scenario and demand revenge, and those Congresspeople will make it very difficult for the Republican Party and its leaders to negotiate with the Democratic president or other legislators on critical issues. People from Trump districts are going to rebel or lose their jobs in the next election, and it's going to be a big mess for our country.
Not that we haven't seen this as a huge problem already with the Obama administration. John Boehner quit because of it; and Paul Ryan is having no better luck taming the crazies.
I'm also going to say something very controversial that I've constrained myself from saying for more than a week now. I was very upset that Bernie Sanders did not concede the primary election for a very very long time. (I'm not sure he formally conceded it at all until some very recent speeches, where he is trying to pull back all the crazies who supported him and who are way off the reservation, as we have seen at JPR and elsewhere, spouting conspiracies and hatred). I didn't care about it in terms of electoral outcomes: Hillary Clinton won the primaries in a democratic manner, fairly and squarely, and was going to become the candidate. But the vestiges of all the conspiratorial "rigged" talk during the primary has left a mark that is hard to erase. Fortunately, all the sane Sanders supporters have come aboard and understand the imperative of keeping together to ensure that the country moves in the right direction--even if they have reservations about how fast or far that progress may extend. But there are a whole lot of crazies, as well as impressionable young people, who still live with the idea that Bernie was robbed, that the elections are fixed, that the parties cannot be trusted, that ...
It's really bad for the nation and our priorities.

(54,414 posts)There are enough crazies out there and there are DEFINITELY enough guns. If Trump takes his ego trip to the point where he wants to drag out an obvious result, he could have some blood on his hands. Just like O'Reilly--he denied all responsibility for the killing of Dr. Tiller, but he should have been indicted for incitement, because that is exactly what he did.
If Trump is careful with his words, he could refuse to concede without inciting less-than-stable people to go out and cause deadly harm, but when was the last time Trump was careful with his words?

(24,689 posts)-- Demanding recounts in states with close margins..
-- Sue election officials he thought violated regs.
-- Rile up his supporters by going on national media claiming fraud and cheating.
It could get ugly I suppose depending on how rabid he becomes.

(14,566 posts)Republicans want him to go away at the strike of midnight on November 9th.
They will VERY quickly try to disown him, make it out like he happened to them and then engage in their normal 24-7 obsession with destroying the democratic president.
This country is THAT stupid, that if Trump were to fade away, they will very quickly go back to indulging republicans, conservatism, and lapping up the evil liberal bullshit they rally around.
The more that Trump defines the republican party, the more they have to own him, the better, frankly.
So, let him piss and moan, let him start the Trump TV channel, let him tear away at the party, hand him around their seditious necks.
