Trump Is Winning. Against Paul Ryan.

Al Hunt

Donald Trump hasn't succeeded in discrediting Hillary Clinton, but he has managed to tarnish one target: Paul Ryan, the top Republican office holder in the country.

This week's Bloomberg national poll, which has Clinton trouncing Trump, shows the painful extent to which the GOP presidential nominee has dragged down the speaker of the House. Ryan's favorability with all voters has dropped, while the Republicans surveyed think Trump, not Ryan, should be the face of the party. This follows a series of attacks on Ryan by Trump for insufficiently supporting him. This week, the nominee even suggested that Ryan might want him to lose since it would clear the way for the speaker to run in 2020.

...snip...

In the Bloomberg poll, 46 percent of all voters have a negative view of Ryan, and only 37 percent favorable, a drop from earlier surveys this year. More striking, when asked who represents their view of the party, Republicans by 51 percent to 33 percent prefer Trump over Ryan.

That's a pretty staggering number because it is of all voters. This was the VP candidate just four years ago, and most think he wants to head the ticket in 2020. His fortunes have foundered in a very short time; of course they may reverse again. He has been part of the creation of this monster and has been a coward in continuing to endorse him. Now, the monster may well destroy him. One of our most enduring models of a monster is Frankenstein's. At least Victor Frankenstein died trying to destroy his creation.

One of my fondest hopes is that Ryan will be thrown out as speaker even if the repugs retain control of the house, echoing what happened to Newt Gingrich. The only problem with that is who might be next up. That party has been a den of vipers for a long time. Its leaders promised a serious reevaluation after the second loss to President Obama, and they've only kept digging their hole deeper.

Largely because of Republican gerrymandering success, combined with the short election cycle, the House has been populated heavily by far right wingnuts. Sane and reasonable Republicans do exist -- honest -- but they are thin on the ground in Washington DC these days, and particularly so in the House.
