2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary Really Is A Formidable Candidate
Her campaigns are always low key and lack a lot of flash or "entertainment" but I am stunned at how effective she is. There was the vox article that was posted here today about her debate prep and the traps that she snared trump in. People always say she isnt an "exciting" candidiate but she is deadly. That lack of outward charisma (Im blanking on a better term) really seems to lull her opponents into a false sense of security. She is such a brilliant strategic mind that going up against her must be frightening but you would only realize it when its too late. The Republicans are starting thr narrative that any of their other rabid candidates would have won but I have significant doubts. It does seem that one of Clintons greatest strengths is how severely people underestimate her. Her apparent weaknesses are actually legendary strengths.
If anyone doubts this assessment think about the one time she has lost. In 2008, she went up against one of the most talented and popular politicans of our generation and battled him to a near draw. It is unbelievable that she nearly beat obama in 2008. Besides a primary battle back when he was first stating in politics, no one has ever come close to best Obama...except Hillary.
People will continue to underestimate Hillary and she will continue to exploit that. I have to say, I am really glad she is on our side.

(4,465 posts)Yep, she is formidable. She is prepared and knowledgeable. People who sell her short and go against her are often sorry. Consider the hapless Bengazi committee, and Donald Trump as two examples.
She is ready.

(24,396 posts)to Hillary on what she needs to say and do. They fall back on the lazy assumptions they've made for years and apply them with a broad brush. Really a meaningless effort.
In the meanwhile, Hillary is studying her opponent and finding their weaknesses. Does anyone think it was an accident that she hit Bernie out of the box in their debates with the "artful smear" comment? She knew exactly what she was doing, and that pretty much stopped the back-handed compliments from Team Sanders. The smiling while sticking in the knife stuff.
With Trump, it was a matter of finding out how to rattle him, which she did in each debate. He really didn't stand a chance. He's too stupid to know when he's being gutted.

(6,496 posts)and I think that is exciting to have a smart woman running for president. I don't understand what other people find exciting in a candidate unless they are talking about public speaking ability. I'd say Bill Clinton was the best at that in my life time and then Obama is 2nd best. Hillary's pretty good at it too, but Bill is very gifted when it comes to public speaking. I thought John Edwards was really good too, but he ruined his career with his affair.
I would say Hillary is charismatic, it's just that people often don't know what that is when it comes to women. It is easier to recognize in men. Men seem to either have it or they really, really don't (it's obvious). Women are better at social interactions typically, so it is hard to stand out from the crowd (of other women) in that way. I don't think I have ever the word charismatic applied women. Really, I never have in my life. Is that weird?

(53,035 posts)I've seen some posts suggesting that people think any candidate could have done that. I disagree.

(3,072 posts)Although his competition wasnt exactly stunning during the primaries, its clear that not just anyone could take him out.

(23,251 posts)I think foreign leaders will be aware that they underestimate her at their peril. She has the smarts, and she has the spine as well, to stand with any of them.

(24,396 posts)He got a sizable win in NH, but when he failed to parlay that into a win in NV he was done. I said that at the time and I see no reason to think differently.
