Related: About this forumCardinal Dolan: Trump, Clinton traded jabs at Al Smith Dinner — but it was different in private

TODAY
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, blessed with the job of playing peacemaker while sitting between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump during a white tie fundraiser, said the two presidential candidates demonstrated a kindness toward each other rarely seen in public.
While each candidate delivered some biting comments while taking a turn behind the dais at the Al Smith Dinner, "there were some very touching moments" in private, Dolan said, describing one right after he asked both of them to pray with him.
After the little prayer, Mr. Trump turned to Secretary Clinton and said, You are one tough and talented woman, Dolan said. "He said, 'This has been a good experience, this whole campaign, as tough as its been.'"
Clinton then returned the compliment.
She said to him, Donald, whatever happens, we need to work together afterward, Dolan said.

(58,785 posts)on those same days that they didn't, Trump did really dirty anti-Hillary things, and/or tried to, that would have made shaking hands with him entirely inappropriate in any other circumstances. His behavior was inexcusable, way beyond the pale, and her avoiding shaking hands with him reflected that. Her choice, not his.
Frankly, a whole lot of people feel that a respectable presidential candidate should never have had to be on the same stage with a person like that. Bizarre election, very serious weakness of elective government on full display to a shocked world.

(54,387 posts)I've seen this since my time as a Senate Page in 1967. Senators who you wouldn't think would even be on speaking terms hamming it up together when the TV cameras are off. Hell, I'm even friends with Richard Viguerie, and if I hadn't met the guy under controlled circumstances, I probably would have killed him upon being introduced (or he would have done me if he drew first). Washington (probably politics in general) is just like that. At the swearing in party for Claire McCaskill at the Senate in January 2013, Roy Blunt, the far right Republican Senator from Missouri, dropped in to congratulate Claire along with Harry Reid and Al Franken. Weird, but that's reality.

(10,252 posts)Although not probable, it's not impossible that Trump could have an epiphany about some of his anger issues and petty jealousies. I'm truly astonished that so many DUers hold such deep grudges against Trump. Yes he is a buffoon, entirely deserving of ridicule and contempt. A character from a Theater of the Absurd. But I truly hope that a President Clinton can demonstrate her generous heart and spirit and reach out a hand of friendship to her foes and critics to inspire us to achieve a higher purpose for the greater good.
I believe that Hillary can do it, and that's why I'm voting for her.
