2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIf looks could kill:
This photo from last night's Al Smith dinner pretty much says it all. A homicidal-looking Donald Trump is in the background, with Hillary Clinton shining brightly in the foreground. The difference between the two candidates is drawn so sharply and clearly here that it may be the photo from this campaign that has the longest shelf life.
Trump knows he has already been defeated by Clinton. It enrages him, but his rage is impotent and has no outlet. That's the story of this election. The GOP chose very, very poorly. It shows here. That powerless, enraged man was their choice. Now, they must live with it. The Secret Service should never allow Trump near Hillary. I believe he may be a dangerous risk as Election day draws closer.

(899 posts)This man is so sick and his illness is so contagious, he should not be allowed to mingle with humanity. I can tell by the people who support him, that it's an insidious, airborne disease, in that it is spread by word of mouth. His minions will destroy not only this country, but the whole world if allowed to gain one ounce of control.

(58,785 posts)he would take the extreme stresses and knocks of campaigning, and loss. How badly and just plain how would he manifest? The how has been very interesting to watch and the "how badly" a constant series of disasters not worse than I guessed, but not better.
The poor schmuck was unsure whether to stand or sit as the crowd gave her a standing ovation last night, and apparently a lip reader reported that he muttered that she did a good job. He wants to belong.
As for being dangerous to Hillary, I would never sit her next to him at a table, even though she normally wears pants. In any case, they won't be in the same place after this.

(61,611 posts)I have personal familiarity with people with personality disorders - unfortunately - and the underlying cause of all their boorish, infuriating, self-destructing behavior is a deep sense of inadequacy. Donald feels that he is a failure on all levels. His narcissism is a cover for self loathing and despair. It makes him very dangerous. He can't admit it to himself so he can't fix it.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)particularly shocking and frustrating for you. Let's hope that after this a much larger proportion of Americans has some understanding that personality disorders are real and disabling.

(58,785 posts)At least a couple are almost certainly clinically diagnosable and several others show "traits of" whatever, as psychologists say.
Super-rich conservatives have teamed with the impassioned social/religious right to elect Republicans who are much farther right than the typical Republican, and my impression again and again has been that the far right (and far left) produce a lot of people who are not fit for office or to be trusted with power anywhere, but especially in a republic.

(53,032 posts)People lined up to speak to Clinton. A couple of people shook Trump's hand, but far fewer than Clinton's. While attendees continued to line up to congratulate Clinton, Trump made his way out of the room.
Now I expect part of this is that they know Clinton will be the next president, and success has a way of attracting people. I also expect, however, that some of it was revulsion for his campaign and his comments at the dinner.
krkaufman
(13,435 posts)Agreed, I saw the same thing.
But I expect the difference in attention paid to each candidate after the dinner may also relate to their past actions and experiences with those in attendance. Hillary's been in public service for years and was Senator from New York, while Donald has made a living out of cheating others and exacting revenge on anyone who he perceives as having wronged or even challenged him. PBS Frontline's 'The Choice 2016' provided some good insight into Trump's approach to business that explains why he has so little support from his past business partners or his workers.

(7,963 posts)That the Uber mega rich crowd of NYC have never fully accepted him. I think it was Bloomberg (don't quote me. I am not 100 % sure), said that part of it was because Trump sucked at giving. To run with that crowd you have to donate a respectable amount. It makes sense. If You have billions and you only donate 7 million dollars (I think that was how much he donated), that is really cheap.
So it doesn't surprise me that not a whole lot of people @ that dinner went up to say speak to him. With that as the background and the current election status in the foreground, it is no wonder he looks the way he does.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)It's true. He is loathed by the NYC high society, and that is only one of the many reasons.
MineralMan
(146,309 posts)and who make large donations are justifiably suspicious of those who want to be hangers-on without material participation.
Trump isn't a philanthropist at all. He only gives money where it will benefit him financially. Pretenders in that social circle are routinely rejected by that circle.
Trump is a pretender in every way, and is quickly recognized by those who are not.

(5,810 posts)no matter how enraged he is about this whole situation that HE (and HE alone) created. What is MORE likely is one of his followers would be thrilled to serve their master by taking her out. The Secret Service has their hands full now and in the coming days as this crazy cluster f*%# of an election comes to a close. He has already spread the seeds of hate and revenge...now all he has to do is sit back and wait for one of his deplorables to do the dirty work for him. God, I despise this man and what he has done to our country!
MineralMan
(146,309 posts)Like many cowardly bullies, he incites things but does not directly participate in them. We saw that during his primary rallies, where he encouraged his supporters to attack those who protested against him.
The Secret Service knows its job, and will do it. They're on this. You're not going to see Hillary walking through crowds or any other such exposures. She's well protected, I think.

(13,435 posts)I also noticed from the video that Hillary had many people coming up to speak to/with her, but very little of the same for Donald. More isolation and rejection from the elite Manhattanites from whom he's sought acceptance for so long.
MineralMan
(146,309 posts)Donald Trump, on the other hand, has made enemies. He has also exposed himself for who he is, leading others to simply disregard him. That is the reason for the difference in response from people attending the Al Smith dinner. Nobody really cares to know Donald Trump.
