Is this election worse than previous ones ... with so much hatred, anger and contempt? Or ...

... is it just that I'm noticing it more because I'm online more? For previous elections, I wasn't as "plugged-in" as I am this time around, so maybe it's not that things are actually worse, only that it appears that way because I'm closer to the "action".

I hope that's the case. But, I'm afraid that I might be wrong ... and I'm afraid I'm seeing the beginning of something that will get worse and worse as the years go on.

It got worse in 2008 with right wing hysteria over a black man being POTUS.

It is twice as bad now because the Rs are not running a normal candidate and the one they are running is more hateful than any previous R candidate.

5. That, they can't stand a black man in the WH, and now, the horrors of a woman president in the WH.

And Trump loves hatred, violence and persecution. Also, many of them loath gay marriage ... and people of color. They only like stupid and backward people like they are ...

While there has never been a "civilized" election season in my memory, this is vastly worse than anything else. There has NEVER been a candidate who has belittled, insulted, and denigrated virtually every one else as Donald Trump has. Most 8 year olds are better behaved and have a better vocabulary than he does. There has never been an election in which one candidate has vowed to jail the other.

The list just goes on.

Yeah, '08 was nasty, and we know that skin color was that reason, even if some want to disagree with that assessment. '12 was bad, but i don't think it was as bad as '08. This election cycle has been nuts though. The GOP has two more tries to upset progress. The mid-terms in '18, then the general election in '20. After the 2020 census and the resulting redrawn congressional districts, the GOP will most certainly be toast.

as far as how personal the candidates have been and plenty of outright bigotry. I think Trump's combination of lack of intellegence, and his level of narcisism is pretty unique. I don't recall ever hearing about a major party candidate preemptively suggesting he won't accept the results if he doesn't win, or publically talking up hostile foreign dictators the way he does.

The scary part is thinking about what Trump could do if he were more intellegent and more politically savy. His platform doesn't actually matter to a significant portion of his base, it's all about his nationalist and authoritarian image. Like a personality cult. If he were a smarter and more polished politician, he may have managed to lurch left, take some more of the Bernie Sanders independents, and made this a lot closer at this point. He made a couple half hearted attempts at this, but is unable to overcome what an overtly terrible human being he is.

But then I remember almost being run off of the road, in 2004, because of my Kerry bumper sticker.

We aren't displaying any yard-signs or bumper-stickers this year.... for that very reason. People are scary.

He has been a real hero, during the Flint water crisis. And he is VERY popular. I have no doubt he will win re-election by a big margin.

And a couple of my neighbors do have Clinton/Kaine yard signs, but we really are in a very heavily Democratic area.

However, north, south, east and west?? Not so much.

pretended to like all different people, and treat even their opponent civilly. We've seen none of that in this campaign. It's definitely NOT our imagination. Every talking head & reporter has said, MANY TIMES, that the Con does & says things that would have sunk any other candidate. That's TRUE! Now all they say is "I'm not going to voice me opinion because every other time I said he's done, I was wrong." The crowning proof is that "There has NEVER BEEN a candidate booed at the Al Smith Dinner."
