2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSeeking honest opinions: is this design I made offensive?
I made this design last night based on inspiration from the nickname someone adopted on Twitter. When I went to post it on Zazzle it flagged it for content review, and I was just notified that it was rejected because apparently they don't allow any references to the word "Nazi", regardless of context. This was not at all clear from their content guidelines.
As of now it is still for sale on CafePress and Redbubble, but I am wondering if it is over the top and I should take it down. I am pretty sure everything in my stores would offend deplorables, but if this offends other people who share my views I want to remove it. I am curious what other DU'ers think. FWIW, I don't throw the word "Nazi" around lightly.
If you find it offensive I am curious why if you have a moment to share.

(4,490 posts)Kind of like the infamous "Taliban Dan" attack ad, I just don't think enough people will be on board with the comparison, no matter how much it actually fits. Too much backfire potential.

(11,605 posts)I never called Bush a Nazi and argued with other liberals, probably some here, who liked to make Bush/Hitler comparisons. But with Trump I see scary parallels to the way Hitler came to power in the 1930's. Right wing populism combined with demonizing particular ethnic groups, working to undermine confidence in democratic institutions, and trying to create the sense that things are irrevocably broken and he is some kind of savior. He's also amplifying the voice of the fringe alt-right and bringing it into the mainstream. And the "Skittles" tweet (albeit by his son, but Trump Sr never disavowed it) was eerily similar to the poisonous mushroom theory from 1930's Nazi textbooks.
Hillary was right to call many of his supporters deplorable, and I was sorry she retreated from that in the 2nd debate.

(841 posts)Trump is different from other Republicans in that he is not just using racist dog whistles he is using a megaphone. The scariest thing about his campaign is that he is really riling up the far right. I don't recall any Republican, no matter how bad on other issues, doing this. In fact, I think the far right usually hates Republicans almost as much as Democrats. Now in Trump they see somebody who can mainstream their ideas.
The fact that Trump is saying the election is rigged, refusing to come out and say that he will accept the outcome of the election, these are all the makings of a "stab-in-the back" myth just like the ones the Nazis used to explain why Germany lost World War I. For these reasons I don't think it is wrong to call out Trump as a fascist or at least someone who is fanning the flames of fascism.

(11,605 posts)I was just curious if it offended people who share my dislike of Trump. Obviously his followers will find it offensive - except maybe some of the neo-Nazis who are proud to have him as one of their own.

(1,415 posts)I would save Nazi parallels for dictators. Not Trump. I despise Trump but I think it goes too far to equate him with Nazis.

(11,605 posts)From his talk about throwing his opponent in jail if he wins and Putin being a "stronger" leader than President Obama it kind of feels like he is.
As a general rule I agree with you that the word "Nazi" should not be used lightly. But I think Trump has shown dictatorial aspirations and has used many of the same tactics Hitler used in seeking power. Remember, Hitler came to power democratically.

(8,379 posts)for those of us that the holocaust has personally effected, it's extremely offensive.

(11,605 posts)I saw it as a way of calling attention to the parallels between the campaign Trump is running and the campaign Hitler ran in the 1930's, as well as Trump's mainstreaming and amplification of the alt-right and other hate movements.
If you don't mind my asking, do you find all Trump/Hitler comparisons offensive, or just the button?
I appreciate your honest feedback and I apologize again for offending you.

(8,379 posts)I'm not big on any Hitler/Trump comparisons but there's something about seeing it in print that makes it worse for me. I totally get that it is important for the world to see the comparisons between the rise of Hitler and the kind of hate speech that trump and his deplorables spout, to ignore it is dangerous. And his ugly rhetoric has give rise to a new wave of anti semitism that is frightening. I think comparing trump to a would be dictator is one thing, comparing him to someone who systematically murdered 12 million people, 6 million of them were Jews, that doesn't feel like the same thing.
I think seeing the words nazi and hitler are very different from hearing them.
I hope this helped. Thanks for asking!
