2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo this morning the GOP's favorite wet dream, Gen Petraeus, was on Morning Joe
Some background, three weeks ago, Retired Gen. Michael Hayden, was on the show. At that time I posted the following:
So right out of the box, Scarborough asks the General in relation to the situation in Syria and the bombings and killing of civilians and innocent people. "Can you think of any time when we, the world, has stood by like this and watched while thousands and hundreds of thousands of people are being killed?" Obviously, his question was meant to direct the conversation towards blaming President Obama's Syrian policies for the killings. The General surprised Joe with his response. "Yes. In my professional lifetime, I've seen this at least 4 times. In Bosnia. In Croatia. In the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the Genocide in Rwanda". (He shut you up didn't he Joe?)
So last week, MSNBC Contributor Richard Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations, was on Morning Joe and Joe asked him the identical question that he had asked Gen Hayden, two weeks prior in relation to the situation in Syria and the bombings and killing of civilians and innocent people. "Can you think of any time when we, the world, has stood by like this and watched while thousands and hundreds of thousands of people are being killed?" Again, his question was meant to direct the conversation towards blaming President Obama's Syrian policies for the killings. Richard Haass' response was "Yes. I've seen this a few times in Bosnia, Croatia, Yugoslavia and Rwanda." (Move along Joe.)
So this morning, Gen Petraeus was on the show, and I guess having stuck out twice trying to pin all the Middle East woes on President Obama, Joe decided to take a different approach. He asked Gen Patraeus about the military invasion into Mosul against ISIS, having been there before. But Petraeus comes back with something like: Well alot has been done, particularly in the area of social media. Before we can defeat ISIS we have to expose them for the liars that they are. He also discusses Sec of State Kerry having previously concluded that there was no military option, and says tell that to Putin, only in the next sentence to agree with Sec Kerry's original position that 'there is no military option'.
So Petraeus goes on to inform Joe of all the things that they have been going on behind the scene to prepare for the invasion and the ousting of ISIS, and he believes that the Iraqi soldiers trained by the Americans are going to be successful. Joe having gained no condemnation of Pres Obama from Petraeus about ISIS, he shifts the conversation to Syria, and should we have gone in their sooner. Again, Petraeus says something in essence that 'Sure we could have gone in their sooner, BUT THEN WHAT? And he makes the BUT THEN WHAT point again in response to something else Joe says, and states "are we going to get into World War III over Syria?"
So then Willie Geist having watched Joe try and fail, asks Petraeus about the mess at the VA. Willie and Petraeus agree that the staff at the VA are wonderful and doing the very best that they can. Petraeus then said that the problem is not with the VA, but one that the Congress needs to solve.
So in the end, Gen Petraeus said NOTHING to blame President Obama for ISIS. Nothing to blame Obama for what's going on in Syria. And that the problem with the VA needs to be fixed by Congress. I know that's not what Joe wanted to hear, but that's all he got.

(9,350 posts)I believe many in America and around the world stood by as Adolf Hitler imprisoned and killed millions of Jews. It seems the same thing happened when Stalin killed millions of Russians. For years American Presidents and politicians have stood by as the Saudi royal family mistreats and kills people. There seems to be an endless number of places in the world where dictators were left alone to do whatever they wanted to the people living in their countries.

It's not much different during peacetime
We nosed out communist elements in Italy and Greece, Stalin pushed capitalist

The collapse of the Soviet Union and fall of the Berlin Wall scrambled everything,
we're still dealing with the geopolitical consequences
How do you tell a foreign government, 'don't do that to your own citizens on your
own soil'?
You go to war, so more treaties can be made when it's over
