First day of early voting in El Paso, Texas is "beyond good"

El Paso County Elections Administrator Lisa Wise said turnout for the first day of early voting was going strong, with about 3,000 in-person votes cast by 11 a.m. (UPDATE: At 3 p.m., Wise said 9,400 people had cast in-person early votes with four hours left to go at most polling places. That number has already surpassed the first-day in-person turnout of any previous early voting period.)

Occasional long lines were reported, including Monday morning at Pavo Real Recreation Center in the Lower Valley, historically one of El Paso's busier early voting sites.

In 2008, 8,658 El Pasoans came out to vote on the first day of early voting. When combined with 2,155 mail ballots received that first day, a total of 10,813 early votes were recorded.

In 2012, the numbers fell to 8,258 in-person voters and 1,222 mail voters, for a total of 9,480.

So what would be a good first-day turnout for El Paso? How about 10,000 in-person voters and 2,000 mail ballots, for a total of 12,000. (UPDATE 2: Wise tells me the county has received about 3,600 mail ballots so far. That's more than the entire 2012 early voting period, and getting close to the 4,633 cast in the entire 2008 early voting period. So as of 3 p.m. El Paso County has had more than 13,000 early votes cast. Using my earlier standard, this is well beyond good for El Paso.)

As polls closed at 6 p.m., more than 63,000 people had turned out for the first day of early voting, shattering the previous record of 47,093 set on day one of early voting in 2012.

In the first 2.5 hours of early voting, the Harris County Clerk's office said 15,205 ballots were cast--one third of the total cast all day on the first day of early voting in 2012, about 47,000.

By the afternoon, the county was averaging 6,000 voters per hour, and the clerk's office projected a record-breaking 60,000 votes by the time polls close.

Tarrant County voters smashed turnout records Monday, as voters began flocking to the polls to weigh in on the Nov. 8 presidential election, the Arlington stadium proposition and a multitude of other races.

On the first day of early voting, more than 43,000 Tarrant County residents voted in person by the time polling places closed, according to unofficial totals.

Monday’s turnout tops past local records in presidential races: 30,133 voters went to the polls on the first day of early voting in 2012 and 28,757 went on the first day of early voting in 2008, Tarrant County election records show.

Wenday Davis was asked about Texas being an unlikely "red" state to be in play. She said that the Dems in Texas don't often see their vote as making any difference to the outcome, but now with the race being close there, they do. She thinks that's why the turnout is up. She said she voted today and it was the first time she ever had to stand in line and wait.
