2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMedia manipulation
While I don't agree that the media is inherently bias as most facts tend to be against conservatives, the media certainly does a great job manipulating the American electorate. First it was the free coverage for trump because he said crazy things and could get good ratings. Now with the election all but sealed up, and looking like a blowout landslide the media is trying to drag this back into a horse race. Nearly every channel is covering the premium increases under the ACA. Without reporting facts. Jake Tapper just got owned by one of the architects for pushing a false narrative and he just brushed it off ass well millions of Americans will be in a hard place after this. Failing to mention eligibility for subsides would cover the increases for the majority of those in the exchanges. No one holds the medias feet to the fire and they have become purely driven by ratings and money.

(36,437 posts)People aren't switching to Trump over this.
Trump is a deeply loathsome person that most people want to lose the election.

Obama said it needs updating and fixing.
And that could happen if we didn't have a do nothing obstructionist congress.
Of course none of that is interesting to talk about - just the shock value of 22%.

(5,272 posts)Repub states could have expanded Medicaid and set up state exchanges and encouraged more insurance companies to participate. Repub Congress could have come up with constructive fixes to improve the ACA, but they only wanted perceived "failure" that could be used politically. Even with rate increases, millions more at least will still have health insurance, while those of us who have had health insurance for years have already faced large yearly increases for many years.
Pres. Obama and Hillary have advocated a public option such as expansion of Medicare to help those who can't afford private insurance and don't qualify for Medicaid in their states.

(58,785 posts)plan increases. It's not just the exchanges. It's enrollment time for millions of employees across the nation who get insurance through their work, and for most premiums are going up. For almost everyone, premiums are rising more than wages.
Note also that these averages are for POLICY PREMIUMS, ranging from -3% change to 110% change.
They're NOT changes in what the average person will pay, even before the subsidies. Generally speaking, people in urban areas will see less increase than rural, and one guess where the vast majority of people live?
