2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI get the feeling that Comey did this to save his job.
There is no way that a President Hillary Clinton can now fire him without looking vindictive.

(36,223 posts)Stating that no person who leads a federal law enforcement agency can attempt to sway an election.
That is it a crime against our democracy. We are not some third world where federal law enforcement agencies get to force their political will on others.

Hell it's bad enough the Russians are doing it. Our own FBI is doing it now?

(16,881 posts)Derived from internationally accepted standards, the World Justice Projects definition of the rule of law is a system in which the following four universal principles are upheld:
1. The government and its officials and agents as well as individuals and private entities are accountable under the law.
2. The laws are clear, publicized, stable, and just; are applied evenly; and protect fundamental rights, including the security of persons and property and certain core human rights.
3. The process by which the laws are enacted, administered, and enforced is accessible, fair, and efficient.
4. Justice is delivered timely by competent, ethical, and independent representatives and neutrals who are of sufficient number, have adequate resources, and reflect the makeup of the communities they serve.
These four universal principles are further developed in the following nine factors of the WJP Rule of Law Index, which measures how the rule of law is experienced by ordinary people in 99 countries around the globe...

Without genuine Rule of Law democracy is impossible.

That's actually the WORST thing you could do. Feed the whole conspiracy wingnuts narrative. If there's nothing there, there's nothing there.
Don't feed the wingnuts....

Such interference should be an automatic disqualification. I can't understand why he isn't completely laughed out of office, if nothing else. So if somehow someone finds emails that may also have been sent to Hillary Clinton on ANY third party's computer, that revives the investigation of the emails on her server? That is purely and simply nuts.
Comey is not only a boob, but a tool. He has no business whatsoever being in charge of the FBI. :yoiks

(804 posts)Obama will "ask for his resignation" after the election so that President Clinton will not have to deal with this incompetent partisan. Surely there are more suitable candidates available to head the FBI. The FBI should not have the stigma of partisan politics attached to it... not in a vibrant democracy.

(5,901 posts)He's been going at her politically for almost two years. The only reason we have an email "issue" is because Comey pursued it with a vengeance. That he makes this radical move within a fortnight of the election indicates that he's a partisan legal hack.

(879 posts)Saved a Republican Congress. Hillary was going to fire him anyway. His statement this summer was inappropriate and out of line. He's a goner. Obama is going to fire him. He went against Loretta Lynch. This was not about his personal job, this was about his party. It's one of the scummiest things in political history, likely violated the Hatch Act, and he needs to be fired and investigated.
Hillary will win anyway, but he might have fired up the Republican base enough to show up and prevent the landslide that would turn over the House.

(16 posts)I am shocked by what's going at the FBI level, some say there was a coup, some say it new info. I do think that this entire thing from beginning to now has been mishandled. Am I missing something? If they they had anything why did they not indict her in July? Is this really new info? This whole thing is giving me a headache. I just want this election done and over with, we will worry about cleaning up afterwards.

(112 posts)Since he has tenure, by Senate vote, his departure would depend on the criteria set in the FBI director's conduct obligations. That is, it should say in his job description what actions could lead to dismissal "for cause."
If he has one iota of brain cell activity he will offer his resignation on January 20 and, if she is smart as I think, she will accept it. I am sure she already knows who she wants to replace him.
