On the national stage, Maddow said, it sounds as though Republicans are engaged in what she called a "course correction," walking back the party's rhetoric on some issues including immigration and contraception rights.
But where Republicans are really in control of government, as in Kansas for example, Maddow said the party is taking steps to "crack down on immigrants who want to go to college." She also said that the Republican leadership in Indiana is moving to add a constitutional ban on gay marriage to the state constitutionin a state where gay marriage is already illegal. In Ohio, Maddow said, one of the first things the state government did after the November election was hold a hearing on defunding Planned Parenthood.
"All over the country if you look at state newspapers and state news bureaus right now covering what it is that Republicans are planning to do where they have governing authority in the states, the contrast between that reporting about what Republicans are doing, and the Beltway discussion about what Republicans theoretically ought to maybe be doing, it's like reading news from two totally different universes," Maddow said. "It's totally disconnected.

(14,566 posts)In Pa, the democratic candidates for congress had 2% more total votes than the R candidates, but won only 5 of 18 congressional seats.
Think about that moment.
You are dealing with some of the most gerrymandered districts in the country. But, Pa it not only state with total or near total republican control. People find a way to vote for republicans regardless of how putrid they are.
And, they can get away with all kinds of nonsense and people just don't pay attention or care.
In Pa, they passed one of the worst Voter ID bills in the country, defunded education by a billion dollars, totally capitulated to the fracking industry. It never ends. But, they have a mortal lock majority in the senate and control the house most often. Corbett likely would be OK for another term, but has SERIOUS problems because of his role in enabling Sandusky and also his antagonistic relationship with Penn State.
But, these clowns can do A LOT and get away with it.

(13,992 posts)the GOP took back total control of the state government (the recalls last year had temporarily given the Democrats the State Senate) and now their first priorities are to a) end same-day voter registration and b) restrict abortion.
I love that Obama is in the White House, but we really have to do something more at the state and local level. They're killing us out here.

(14,566 posts)They just NEVER stop, and ALWAYS are working for political gain.
They get to publically say they are just worried about jobs and the economy, but their actual legislative work is geared toward the social issues in some way or further gaming elections to win elections.
