2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe end is near for the Republican party
...
Some Republicans are even studying the collapse of the Whig Party in the mid-19th century, hoping they can avoid a similar fate. Others are girding for proxy wars that will be waged on Capitol Hill, within the Republican National Committee, and live on the set of Fox News.
Its like Humpty Dumpty fell and broke, then a giant lawn mower ran over it, acid was thrown on the pieces and a bunch of racist idiots ran off with an arm and a leg, said John Weaver, a longtime Republican consultant. How do you put it back together? I dont know.
...
I just think people are looking for something more new than just retraining old dogs, said Representative Kevin Cramer, a North Dakota Republican and an early Trump supporter. ... He said party leaders would be sorely mistaken if they attempt to dismiss the Trump movement, the one that improbably carried him to victory over 16 Republican rivals, many of whom were more experienced and better funded. (emphasis mine)

So I guess they will continue supporting "Trumpism" even after he loses, and careen off the cliff as they race to reach even greater extremes of ignorance and incompetence. Either that, or, as the article points out, they will tear themselves apart fighting over what the hell they even stand for. The Republican party is headed straight into the trash bin of history. The funniest line in the article was about it being difficult for them to put forth a policy agenda. Since when have the Republicans put forth any agenda except for obstruction?

(9,313 posts)2. What will "trumpism" look like without Trump?
I think you've got it:
careen off the cliff as they race to reach even greater extremes of ignorance and incompetence.
As soon as there is nothing to win, Trump will be off to wreak destruction elsewhere.
As far as I can tell "trumpism" = Trump saying whatever the hell pops into his head. The more more insane, the more it's seen as a demonstration of how "genuine," "refreshing," and wonderful he is.
So what is "trumpism" without Trump? A bunch of guys fighting for title of "most genuine" by saying crazier and crazier things, "careen(iing) off the cliff as they race to reach even greater extremes of ignorance and incompetence"?
Sounds about right.

republican party from those who are more concerned about social issues/changes and the ones like romney who are more about economics .

But they will keep lurching on on bifurcated fashion. Not a chance they break up.
They will unite around 2 things, their shared hatred of Hillary and also the belief that they will probably crush us in the 2018 midterms.

(841 posts)7. Unfortunately the Republicans are still strong at the state level.
The GOP also seems to have a lock on the U.S. House due to gerrymandering which is a product of Republican success at the state level. We have a lot of work to do at the state level to try to fix this problem.
