It was closer in 2008 - 17-10 Obama and Bush won it 16-14 over Kerry in 2004 and 17-13 over Gore in 2000.

Don't read too much into the results from these towns. They lean conservative and tend to vote Republican. Dixville voted for the Republican in every election since 1960 — including Barry Goldwater who lost in a landslide to Lyndon Johnson — until going for Obama in 2008, and splitting the vote between Romney and Obama in 2012.

Since reviving midnight voting, Hart's Location voted for Dole in 1996, Bush in 2000 and 2004, and, like Dixvillem, broke with tradition to vote for Obama in 2008 and 2012.

Dixville had a better track record in the GOP primary and predicted every Republican nominee since 1968 (counting ties in 1980 and 2012), but that streak came to a crashing halt when Donald Trump walked into town and John Kasich edged out the future nominee 3-2.

Obama was a different, one of a kind, candidate.

I've often said, this whole "First in the nation" crap with NH and IA needs to stop.

These are White Land States, and no offense to white people, but they are not defining "America" anymore. They're a PART of the whole, but they no longer own the road. America is a lot more complex than white New Englanders and heartland farmers, and the "first in the nation" states should reflect that truth. I'd be in favor of letting a more diverse state vote first in primaries, one with real cities, not cities that are the size of some mid-sized towns.

This whole "first in the nation" nonsense starts with the primaries and ends at the generals.

If I lived in Dixon's Notch or Hart's Location, I'd be the sourpuss at the town meeting, asking how much we're paying in overtime and heating and electric to get our sad little name in the news!

Its not all fun and wonderful as some people seem to think. It brings a LOT of money to our state to be sure but I would happily take a break from being pummeled with politicians and ads for years before the voting.

Thing is, larger states are prohibitive for candidates without unlimited funds. It would probably be fine in a state like MA though. You guys can have the first primary with my blessing. Although I'm far enough south that I'd still see the damn ads. Just my luck.

As for Dixville Notch etc - yeah. Its ridiculous. But I don't suppose it costs too much to open polls for 15 minutes one night every 4 years.

money that would have to be replaced with federal subsidies of some sort. All the hotel taxes from the "gaggles" that follow the candidates and their teams, to say nothing of all the restaurants that make a killing from the influx of reporters, many of whom like to get plastered, which is great for the bottom line (from a server's perspective).

Hell--give it to Rhode Island! Tiny state, easy to get around, better ethnic mix than NH or IA--but still not representative of America... How about Delaware? They're small and easy, too--and maybe we could put the whole "credit card" thing on trial by having the first outing there!

Who am I kidding--they'll never change it. It's a damn circus. The most they might do is ADD one, and make it more stressful, still...!

Peoples heads (up here) explode at the sheer thought of moving the primary. We should just change the motto to "Vote First or Die". Its obviously more important than the "Live Free" part.

I've been there a few times. It's not far from Story Land, which is a great place to take young children. So much fun.
