An appreciation post for all the polling place volunteers

One of my co-workers volunteers for every election. She arrived at 5 am today and will be there until probably 8pm tonight. I thanked her yesterday as I was leaving work. There are thousands of people around the country who do this work for us.

I run a precinct for my County's elections board. I will leave the house at 6:30 AM open the polls at 8:00 AM, shut down the polling place at 8:00 PM. Anyone in line at poll closing time gets to vote, so it might drag on. It will take at least an hour to count the ballots and reconcile that number with the people who voted and the people who registered to vote. Then I drive to the Elections office with all the ballots and the ballot scanners, hopefully all the forms are filled out correctly. There will be 160 precincts returning their ballots at the same time and I will be lucky to get home at 11:00 PM. I haven't seen or heard any news all day and when I get home I get to see how the election went.
