2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHeavy turnout in downtown Grand Rapids MI
Longest lines I've ever seen in my precinct. Been voting here for 24 years. This is a Dem area downtown, lots of minorities and women in line.

(34 posts)I've watched a bunch of her speeches over the past few months, but seeing her give one in person was incredible. I was so impressed, more than I can possibly explain.

(19,066 posts)Downtown is fully Dem and liberal at that. I can say that I am pretty active in my community, I live in a mixed race neighborhood, probably still 65% white, but that's not what I saw at the polling stations, it was mostly minorities and women. Got to work and other people I know who live in the city said their lines were as long or longer. And universally longer than 2012.

(1,332 posts)Hubby and I will be going to the poll this afternoon. We vote in a school and there's hardly ever anyone there, I don't think I've ever
waited for more than a couple of people. Should be interesting to see
today. We are both eligible to vote absentee because we're old people but will still like to vote in person.

Downtown is liberal here, West Side can be pretty mixed, but is changing fast.

(19,066 posts)1 block from Houseman Field. It is a great area, nice neighbors who look out for each other, very safe area. I voted up at St. Isadore Catholic School.

(34,403 posts)became too ill to maintain it & we had to sell it in 2006. After we sold our house, we moved into an apartment across the street, lol. We stayed there for 3 years until he had to enter a nursing home. That's one of the best areas in Grand Rapids, imho. Not nearly as pricey as Heritage Hill.
I enjoy living in Lansing, but I do miss that old neighborhood. I worked at the GVSU Health Sciences building on Michigan & Lafayette, so I could walk t work most days. It was great. I'm happy to know that a fellow Duer lives in my old stomping grounds!

(19,066 posts)I walk my dog down Atwood a couple times a week. We live on Langdon, love it, so quiet for living in the city.
catbyte
(34,403 posts)that huge pine tree is still out front. You're so right about it being quiet for being so close to downtown. Atwood was so quiet. The only drawback was the street was so narrow that snowplows had a hard time clearing the street, even with odd/even parking. Thanks for the memory!

(19,066 posts)Bob Fry? Can't remember if he lived east or west of Grand. 722 is East of Grand.
catbyte
(34,403 posts)their last names. Yup 722 is the block that's next to the cemetery, but you know that too. I always liked our block of Atwood better than the 600 block. We looked at a house on the 600 block before we bought our house, but there was too much traffic from Union to Grand cutting down Atwood.

(34,403 posts)bit out of the loop on what's happening over there. I retired from Grand Valley last year after 34 years, so it was nice to see that she stopped in Allendale yesterday. I saw some of my old friends and coworkers in the audience--cool! I just voted in Lansing, and it was busy, much busier than the primary, which was the only other time I've voted here. There were 15 people in line ahead of me & about 15 people behind me. I was voter #271, which I guess is pretty good. My neighborhood is very mixed--lots of MSU students (my apartment is 2 miles from the main MSU campus), folks with children, and seniors like me. There were Whites, African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics, and at least one Native American (me). Everybody seemed to be in a good, hopeful mood. Everyone was polite, and seemed to vote with purpose, if that makes any sense. I got the sense that everybody knew just how important this election is. There was a wonderful African American family ahead of me. It looked like a grandma, daughter, and granddaughter. As the grandma waited after voting, the daughter took her daughter into the little cubicle with her as she voted. I ran into them in the parking lot afterwards, and the grandma told the granddaughter, "Remember this day, LaVon, this is the day your mom and grandma helped to elect the first woman president!" The little girl, who looked to be about 10, was just beaming. All in all, an awesome day at the polls.
The weather here is a bit dicey--54F and misting, but that's not bad for Michigan in November. Yesterday it was 66F and sunny. Oh, well.
