Gloating Is Best Done in Private

After tonight's win by Hillary Clinton, we're all going to be overjoyed by her victory. Tomorrow, as we return to normal activities, we're all going to encounter people whose candidate lost this election. How we behave in those encounters will say a lot about us.

In most cases, the people we meet are not rabid right-wingers. But, we all know Republicans. Most of those would rather not have Hillary Clinton as President.

I suggest we moderate our glee and try to avoid taunting smugness when we meet people who did not vote for our candidate. While it's tempting to rub it in that they lost, it's not really a good idea. We will be dealing with those people through the next four years.

Let's be gracious in victory and try to understand the disappointment of others.

That said, though, if someone is truly an asshole about Hillary Clinton's win and behaves badly or is insulting, I think it's OK to grin and show some satisfaction in victory. Then, just turn and walk away from the negative emotions being exhibited. Nothing is accomplished by taunting losers.

I'm sorry but if someone voted for Trump, I have no respect for them. If he was an average republican, I would agree with you. Trump is uniquely unqualified and if a voter is too stupid to recognize that I'll be gloating all over them.

I see your point and it is a sensible one.

But when Hillary wins, it will be so joyous and so spectacular to me that I probably won't be able to contain myself for a few days. The first female President of the United States of America is a Big Damn Deal! Especially to a woman my age. I repeat - it is huge!

I'd actually already been thinking about how to conduct myself with people, particularly friends on Facebook, who are Trump supporters. My expectation is to deliver an olive branch of sorts, but make no mistake, couched tactfully within that olive branch will be the full expectation that it is going to be THEM who need to come together and forge union for the path forward. The obstructionism and division that the Republican party has created has simply got to stop. For the good of the country. The answer to making that stop is for the Republican voters to (for once) give a little rather than expecting Democrats to always do the giving. The Republicans can redeem themselves by getting behind Hillary and supporting policies that make sense. That doesn't mean they have to agree with everything. But they can disagree with respect; rather than posting bullshit, photoshopped pictures of her on Facebook and elsewhere along with outrageous, made up stories to go along with the pictures. They can urge their elected Senators and Congress members to go forward on matters that are for the betterment of the country - instead of opposing anything just because it came from someone named Clinton, which is exactly what started all of this IMHO. Anything Bill proposed, regardless of how good it was for the ordinary American, was met with strong opposition, just because he was "Bill". That is childish and ridiculous and it has got to stop.

family members who are hidden right now. After the election is over and a couple of weeks have passed, I'll remove the hides. If they continue to be problems for me, I'll hide them again for a while.

I don't write people off forever if they disagree with me about something. I know who is voting for Trump among the people I know. I've been avoiding all things political with those people. Once things have settled down after the election, I have no doubt that we'll resume our normal relationships in other areas.

It's easier for me to avoid conflict than to deal with conflict with regard to people I must interact with. When the reason for conflict is resolved, I interact with them again.

I don't worry about strangers. They're even easier to avoid or to ignore. But, people who are otherwise part of my life get a different sort of treatment from me. If we disagree, I simply remove myself from interactions if that disagreement is a temporary thing or just about one thing.

I will gloat to the Deplorables, I will try to be courteous and reason with the 30% or so who are living near to reality.

Fascists tried to take over the US government, and there were millions of Americans begging to man the gas chambers, these people deserve to be shamed.
