Lois McMasters Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan series. On the planet Barryar, the emperor (one of the good guys!) sits on a wood and canvas military camp stool instead of a throne, when addressing his subjects. It helps to keep him humble.

Of course, the Coral Caligula probably doesn't read any way, so the lesson would be lost on him.

and brought judicial reform and competent leadership as England was known for not wearing regal costuming and being less concerned about the trappings of wealth. A real leader doesn't need the superficial signs. Nor does a person with confidence.

What I like about Obama, he is confident enough to surround himself with excellent people.
