2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDo You Think Home States Matter In Election ?
Democrats lost florida, North Carolina, Ohio , Penn etc...except for 1 big swing state - Virginia...
I know Tim Kaine was not a charismatic leader but do you think democrats won that state due to Kaine ?
If yes, do you think Sherrod brown is a good presidential candidate as long as he is able to win re-election in 2018 ?
Also, how about a VP from florida ?
I know this is not a good way of selecting presidential candidates but if the system is rigged with electoral votes, we have to select the best options we have in the swing states.
If democrats win florida and ohio, it will be very difficult for the rethugs to win the electoral college again.

(3,635 posts)Kaine did help her carry VA, as Obama only won in by 3.88% and (i believe) she won it this time by 5% or so, the only swing state where she outperformed Obama.
It is more important to choose a VP that helps carry demographic groups and/or bolster the ticket in some way. Kaine didn't help with this, which hurt in the other swing states. I like Kaine, but he wasn't used properly (was never on the news, unlike Pence who was always on), and in hindsight she probably needed to pick someone more exciting, considering her own campaign lacked some enthusiasm amongst the young people and even PoC. Someone like Becerra or Booker may've been a better choice in this regard.

(26,748 posts)One analysis (Silver?) says that it's about three points.
By that measure, Brown could be a consideration - assuming he holds off a challenger in 2018 (showing continued statewide support with off-year turnout).

(89,252 posts)it could make a difference depending on many things.
i think a different VP pick could have made a difference in 2004 since that was close enough. and Edwards didn't do the part of defending the Pres candidate which is the biggest thing that matters.
