BRIAN BEUTLER DECEMBER 13, 2012, 1:12 PM 3512
House Speaker John Boehner passed up two opportunities Thursday to rule out bringing up a vote on legislation to extend middle income tax cuts, allowing the Bush tax cuts for top earners to expire. But he suggested that if the year ends without a broader agreement between himself and President Obama, hell use the debt limit to provoke a new round of budget negotiations.
Asked at his Thursday Capitol briefing if he categorically refuses to advance legislation extending the middle-income Bush tax cuts, Boehner acknowledged that the law of the land today is that everyones income taxes are going to go up on Jan. 1. Ive made it clear that I think that is unacceptable. But until we get this issue resolved, that risk remains.
Pressed again in a followup question, he kept his options open.
My goal is to get to an agreement with the President of the United States that addresses this problem, he said.
If Boehners forced to extend middle-income tax cuts only, its unlikely that Congress will raise the debt limit before the end of the year. That, he suggested, will allow him to reopen negotiations with Obama early next year.

(1,140 posts)I remember there being some kind of circuitous route for the president to just allow it to be raised without congress.

Frankly, I think that we should scrap the whole idea and/or give the power to raise it to the Treasury. It really makes no sense at all for us to have to keep fighting over this. Of course, now that the Republicans got their first taste playing with this new "toy" last year has only made them want to do it more. Hell, they're even trying to get out of the LAST deal that they made to resolve the LAST fight over the debt ceiling. What are they hoping to get out of another battle?

(720 posts)Obama needs to tell him:
65% on all income over 250k
90% on all investment income over $1 mil.
90% estate tax
no more charity deduction
Do away with Obamacare and Medicaid.
Medicare will be extended for all Americans
All military bases in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas will close.
Now we're under the debt ceiling so do what you want Johnnie.
