2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumCan we really trust Charlie Crist?
Say he runs for governor and beats Rick Scott. What happens if he gets to Tallahassee and has to deal with a Republican legislature and he suddenly turns back to being a conservative again? Maybe he and the GOP will decide to bury the hatchet.
So in other words, are we that desperate to get rid of Scott that we are willing to throw aside real liberals and roll the dice on a political chameleon who just 4 years ago said Sarah Palin would make a great president?
Also he left the GOP when he was getting creamed by Rubio in the primary and then ran as an independent, which actually split the Democrat vote in the general election. How do we know he won't do the same thing in the Democratic primary for governor? What if he runs in the primary and then loses, will he run as an independent again? He'll end up splitting the vote again and Rick Scott walks back into office.
Have fun with that....I don't trust this guy for a minute. I know it might be cool to use this guy against Republicans. But this has a significant probability of backfiring horribly.

(6,457 posts)Just look at what we in Florida have now. A real Repug weasel. Crist was a good Governor. I voted for him before and will support him again. I never ever voted Republican before, but I made an exception with him. I wish you would not lump him in the mold of other Republican's who have changed sides.

He is, of course, a politician.

(345 posts)his reputation here in Florida is a guy who changes with the wind. He'll say whatever he thinks will
win him his next office. Right now the state is slowly moving to the center and his views are moving that way. One of things I'm most interested in seeing are his current views on our state's education system. As the last elected Education Commissioner, he worked right along with Jeb to start up the state's rush to privatize our public schools and dole out public dollars to private companies to run charter schools.
I will give him credit for his governance on abortion. While he says he is anti-abortion, he did foil several legislative attempts to basically outlaw abortion at the end of his last term. Its one of the reasons, the right turned on him in the primary with Rubio.

(63 posts)He simply puts his finger in the air to see which way the political winds are blowing that day and bends accordingly. He was responsible for a massive (and unnecessary) property tax cut that was a dream come true for the high rollers. I like Crist jumping on board and I respect the good things he did; but he's still opportunistic Chain Gang Charlie to me.
Seeing their respective body language together, I cant help but think that our President genuinely likes Crist on a personal level and sees much common ground with him. I trust the Presidents judgement here and I know the main goal will be building an even bigger tent to compete/eventually defeat the FL. GOP at a statewide level. Little steps on a path to bigger and better things.

(3,335 posts)As he has said, the party left him. I happen to like him and think he is a good fit for the Democratic Party.

(81 posts)In Florida it is going to take a moderate to take the Governorship and Christ is pretty moderate. Anyone but Scott please!

(2,237 posts)If you look at party switchers in congress, you see they always tend to have significant changes to their voting record at sites that analyze how liberal/conservative politicians are.
Also, Crist is still young enough to have dreams of holding other elected offices in the future in Florida, even a career as a private citizen who makes some money off their fame as a governor would be helped more at this point by a shift in a liberal direction, since he's already a traitor in republican's eyes.
Also, I'd gladly rather have a 50/50 moderate then a radical corrupt bastard like Scott who tries to personally profit off his time in office, like his drug testing bill that just happens to benefit a drug testing company he owns stock in.
