(snip)
In some of the Rust Belt states that Mr. Trump picked up, union households made up a little over 20% of the electorate. The difference was that they were more likely to favor the Republican than they did in previous elections. Mr. Trump received around 54% of the union vote in Ohio compared to Mitt Romneys 37% in 2012; 40% in Michigan compared to 33% for Mr. Romney; and 43% in Wisconsin compared to 33% in 2012, according to exit polls.
Nationally, around 18% of the electorate was from union households, the same as in 2012; Mr. Trump was supported by 43% of those union-household voters, compared with 40% for Mr. Romney.
Tom Buffenbarger, who recently retired as president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said that the results indicate that as union density in America has dropped amid a decline in manufacturing, an increasing number of the remaining members are no longer voting automatically Democratic as most union endorsements ask them to.

The exception was Nevada and the story concentrated on it. But I thought that these comments are noteworthy

(6,974 posts)Oh they will, and their president will convince them that the reason they don't have any jobs is Pres. Obama's fault. You know they'll believe him. That's the sad part. But then again, even if he loses half of their vote in 2018, his cyber-hacking buddies over in Russia will help him "make up" the difference.

(2,497 posts)NAFTA was the most effective weapon Trump had against Hillary in those households. The Democratic Party screwed themselves by allowing NAFTA to pass in its current form.
And Trump hung that around her neck like a burning tire.

(167 posts)heard Hillary mention "Union", "Card Check", "Overtime instead of Comp Time" or any other issues that matter to those of us who wear our name on our shirts. I am a supporter, but Dems used to be a party of people who work with their hands. It's great to be the party of special interests, but there needs to be an honest assessment of issues that affect all of us, if any exist. We need to find at least one Venn diagram issue circle that includes every democrat, and then fight like hell for it.

(1,290 posts)And if we can't communicate that to them, we need to figure out how to do it better. It has nothing else to do with any issues other than just making people hear us and understand our ideas for supporting the working class.
President Obama said a couple weeks ago that he went into small towns and controlled his loss margins in them; losing by 20 points instead of 50 points. We can do that again. We did it 4 years ago and we can do it again.

(6,974 posts)I'm in no way saying that Hillary couldn't have sharpened her message more and kept specifically talking about what tRump said about the Federal Minimum wage, kept mentioning that most of his companies were overseas and that he is anti-union over and over and over.
However, what was it that these tRump voters were hearing about their president saying that the Federal Minimum wage was too high at $7.25 that was appealing? Then, he said that maybe we need to get rid of the Federal minimum wage--in essence making states right-to-work states. They liked that message? IF they were paying attention and heard him saying that and STILL voted for him, then they WILL get what they deserve. Over-time pay was struck down, and many people need that overtime pay to make ends meet. This man promised great health insurance, yet we know that Medical Savings Accounts and Vouchers won't cut it--especially since there will be lifetime caps/restrictions put on some types of health care a person or a family may need if there is a disastrous medical situation where someone needs ongoing medical care for a long period of time. Also, if a person is has to purchase health insurance and that health insurance is crappy then what? Can't blame Obamacare for that, because it will be repealed and replaced with the same kind of crap--which is literally nothing pre-Obamacare. We know single-payer is a no go because of the GOP. I hear that people in Kentucky are already getting angry that the governor started relieving them of their Obamacare or Kynect in January of this year. Many hated Obamacare but loved Kynect care. Welp, I guess the'll be back to no health care at all. Guess it'll be back to the emergency room or just suffering and dying. Single payer is the way to go but it's a no go thanks to Rethuglicans.
There's going to be a hideous case of buyers remorse. However, I don't have much faith that people will even KNOW where the fault of that lies, and will fall for the blame game which tRump will play and place all the blame for his problems--lack of jobs, horrible health care on Pres. Obama. Hey, many get their news from Faux Noose and believe in Fake News stories. Additionally, I don't have much faith in the voting system any longer in this country. It's bad enough we have voter suppression/voter disenfranchisement, but now we have what I feel--and I can only speak for ME--voter hacking/coup in which Russia helped this country with and if that weren't bad enough, our own government (FBI) was in on it.
