Because if you were a progressive and an environmentalist, you'd know who Ed Markey is. Yes, if he runs, I want him. A good replacement for Kerry.

And yes, it is about money. If it was not, nobody would worry about an idiot like Brown.

Republicans will occupy 46 instead of 45 seats, and in November/December 2014, he is likely to make another victory/defeat is temporary farewell speech.
Looking at the MA US House Delegation.
Kennedy-D and Keating-D are newcomers. Kennedy-D is more likely to succeed Warren-D in 2024 or 2030.
Tsongas-D is a weak campaigner ie Coakley.
Lynch-D is unpopular among progressives.
Capuano-D will have a tough time winning outside the greater Boston Area in the November General Election against Brown-R.
Tierney-D is damaged goods.
McGovern-D and Neal-D are not well known in the Greater Boston Area.
Markey-D is the dean of the MA US House Delegation. He has been in the US House since 1976. He took a pass in running for the US Senate in 1984(Kerry-D), 2010(Coakley-D or Capuano-D), and 2012 None of the top tier Democrats thought they had a chance to unseat Brown-R and progressives were united behind Warren-D. Markey-D is also from the greater Boston Metro Area, has a huge campaign war chest.

8. If Democrats want to see another African American in the US Senate.

Deval Patrick-D is the perfect candidate to challenge Brown-R in 2013/2014.
He overwhelmingly defeated Kerry Healy-R in 2006. He survived a tough re-election campaign against Charlie Baker-R in 2010- despite declining popularity.
Scott Brown-R is less popular than Bill Weld-R or Paul Cellucci-R but is more popular than Mitt Romney-R
