2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDemocrats have supermajorities in the Mass. house and senate
Can't they change the law back to having an appointed senator until the next regularly scheduled election? They only changed it the first time to prevent Romney from appointing Kerry's replacement if he was elected president (bitter irony, huh?)
Or would they take too much political heat for doing that?
They could cite the cost of holding a special election.

(244 posts)No, we wouldn't want them to use their power. Because you know, we don't want to be like the Repubs in Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Texas, and Florida.
Why are we so worried about what people think? It sure doesn't bother the Repubs when they have the power.

(11,605 posts)I just figured they might not want to risk a political backlash, because at the end of the day it doesn't really affect them.

(11,464 posts)without John Kerry leaving, the glorious thought that Vicky Kennedy could be Senator, that guns can be banished and then someday soon Vicky could run for President or Vice President on the strength of winning the revolution against guns could not have happened.
But with John Kerry's putting himself before the need for dem control of the senate, and without the perfect storm of events the last 3 days, it would have not been possible
now, a win seems easy if Ms. Kennedy runs
but NO to shenaningans again as John Kerry had happen because of him (and then he didn't even come up a winner at the end, so it was all for naught.)
Patrick Deval does not deserve to be blamed for John Kerry doing that.
He can name an interem, either Ms. Kennedy now, or she can have 5 to 6 months to put a team together and campaign and win. Then the interem could be someone who says they will not run in the special.
Go Vicky Go.
Seize the moment, seize the movement
The Dream lives on. (and can you imagine Vicky and Liz together side by side in the Senate at least til Vicky wins on the national ticket with Hillary and Vicky as VP, or as President herself.

(59,504 posts)First, all politicians who run for Senate - and even more those who run for President, have and need a very healthy ego. That said, Kerry was among the last of the more talented people in his generation in the Senate to run for President. (Consider that Gore, Biden, Harken, and Kerrey all ran in earlier year - or years.
I seriously don't see why you think the most junior Senator would lead the AWB legislation - especially as Dianne Feinstein has already spoken of writing legislation and Frank Lautenberg will reintroduce his bill. It is beyond silly to speak of Mrs. Kennedy as VP or President. Also, it seems weird to call Senator Elizabeth Warren "Liz". Are you even sure this is the nickname she chose?

(11,464 posts)You got what you wanted, so why aren't you celebrating?
I myself wish for all 100% of guns to be off the street
not some half assed measure that Dianne and Frank are doing, that won't work
It takes to get ALL LEGAL guns off the street, to get rid of any illegal ones
3 days ago had a perfect storm of 3 different events converge and everything changed
(btw-now we have an alternative if this plays out for all those who had said Hillary and Warren(who are the same age) were too old. I myself never thought age matters.
Isn't it great
Hillary45/Kennedy46 2016.
Kennedy will be the single most powerful person from Mass. when she becomes Senator
Just as Hillary is the single most powerful person from NY
and with Mike Bloomberg as the new Homeland Czar if he wishes to (or just to finance any person who is anti-NRA, anti-Gun we are going to reframe anything and everything
BTW-I over the years am perhaps the only person who thought Teddy was the singular best Kennedy of the 3 brothers.
and THE DREAM LIVES ON.
Teddy was always the singular #1 most liberal person in power in America.
and THE DREAM LIVES ON as if Teddy himself were still here. Funny thing is, America would not have elected Teddy.
But America COULD elect his wife.
Wouldn't it be something-
two wives as President and Vice President.
The singular best thought for America since President Obama got elected and changed the world. The revolution and the dream lives on.

(11,464 posts)I miss John.
They wouldn't let him be on the We are the World song, yet without John and Harry Chapin, there was nobody doing charity in the rock world (since the folk singers did).
Harry and John were direct links to every single charity event (including 12-12-12) that came after
Yet neither is in the rock hof. It's a real shame.
But Far out! To any fans of theirs.
and both were liberals like me. Working within the Democratic party and both working to the goal of world hunger by going to DC and doing the grunt worked needed. Both are sorely missed. And both worked with all the Kennedy's same Kennedy's that passed the torch to President Obama and now President Obama can pass the torch back to Vicky in a more than symbolic way.
FAR OUT!!!
