The GOP created 'fiscal cliff' was a gift he could leverage to get the Bush tax cuts rescinded (which could later be re-instituted <$250k), cut the budget across the board (which could be readjusted next year), and there would be no need to even mention SS or Medicare at this time.

Not to mention that the readjustments to the budget would be the perfect time to force the GOP to give up on the bogus debt ceiling on a permanent basis.
