The fiscal cliff deal that almost wasn't
House Speaker John Boehner couldnt hold back when he spotted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the White House lobby last Friday.
It was only a few days before the nation would go over the fiscal cliff, no bipartisan agreement was in sight, and Reid had just publicly accused Boehner of running a dictatorship in the House and caring more about holding onto his gavel than striking a deal.
Go f yourself, Boehner sniped as he pointed his finger at Reid, according to multiple sources present.
Reid, a bit startled, replied: What are you talking about?
Boehner repeated: Go f yourself.
The harsh exchange just a few steps from the Oval Office which Boehner later bragged about to fellow Republicans was only one episode in nearly two months of high-stakes negotiations laced with distrust, miscommunication, false starts and yelling matches as Washington struggled to ward off $500 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts.

(4,113 posts)The northern part of his district is predominantly Right-to-Life Catholic. Come election time, they resort to their default issue--abortion--in determining who they vote for. Of course, I think it's just an excuse for them to vote Republican even though their candidates stand against everything else in their interests.
The southern part of Boehner's district is suburban Cincinnati, one of THE most conservative areas in the country.
Former colleagues of Boehner during his days as a state representative will tell you he was a womanizing, chain-smoking boozer. He still is, from what I can tell.

I agree Reid was right in what he said but I suspect they don't believe that about themselves and have said things about Dems that drive me insane. I'd do it. And I'm classy. And yes, I have enough hate to swear at the likes of the GOP leaders who are screwing with this country.
Mr.Turnip
(645 posts)I mean who supports him now, what base does he have? Democrats don't, and now most Republicans don't ether, a majority of the GOP caucus actually voted against the Senate deal, his base of support is a minority of the GOP caucus. Even if he does manage to keep the speakership he's in many ways a Speaker in name only, only able to get things done by accepting demands from Pelosi for Democratic support or Cantor and his Teafriends for the support of the loony bin majority of the Republican caucus. He doesn't hold much real power as this entire saga has made perfectly clear, he made a deal with the devil in the Tea Party to gain power and now that devil has turned on him.

(2,577 posts)Remember drunk, orange, crude, and stupid is no way to go through life.
BOehner is a lousy speaker. He is stupid, greedy, and frequently drunk. I'm guessing he swore at the Mormon guy because poor Johnny wasn't able to get into the Johnny Walker on schedule. This legislating cuts into golfing and drinking time. Life is rough for corrupt politicians some days ...
