Rand Paul for the Tea Party and Marco Rubio for the overall GOP
So there will be two rebuttals against the state of the union speech - that sucks.
Will this establish Rubio as a moderate?
Danmel
(4,928 posts)they are not a registered political party. There is no Tea Party line in NY. Ridiculous.
Not sure this is designed to make Rubio look like a moderate, although he is certainly trying to to-image himself. They have allowed this non party party to respond before. Remember "crazty-eyes" Bachmann?
These are both Republican rebuttals no matter what they like to call themselves within their own party. Can we get another democratic point of view in the interest of objectivity and fairness?

(24,721 posts)The responses are nothing more than criticism. If the teabaggers are being given this much legitimacy, then they should be separated from the Republican party, period. When did the networks give time to other offshoots of the Democratic party, such as the Green party?

(11,122 posts)they are being stupid.
President makes speech. Media gives republicans two free responses. Democrats should demand free rebuttal time.

(61 posts)The Tea Party shouldn't have a response at all, unless they officially represent the GOP.

(24,780 posts)the more people will reject them. Let 'em put up their craziest, looniest one. Bachman did her cause a great deal of damage.

(1,941 posts)It was Herman Cain who did it last year:
And though its not the first time that Tea Party conservatives have splintered off from the party establishment with a separate response to the presidents address, the dueling counter-arguments come in the midst of a civil war within the GOP.
Last year, failed presidential candidate Herman Cain was tapped by the Tea Party for the gig, following up Minnesota Republican Michele Bachmann who delivered the rebuttal the year prior

Paul's will be immediately after Rubio's, from the National Press Club. But no idea if it'll be televised - I doubt it, as that's a bad precedent the media is unlikely to want to set.
Gman
(24,780 posts)IIRC, CNN was the only network to cover Bachman. Don't remember if anyone covered Cain, but it likely would be CNN.

(13,364 posts)have we even HAD rebuttals for the State of the Union? This seems to me an invention of the 24 hour news cycle...
It's all just kabuki theater at this point...the POTUS will say what he says, they will do the same, and shit still won't change for any of us here in the trenches....

(7,596 posts)The nutjobs aren't happy with the establishment pick of Marco and want someone even more extreme than him to give the rebuttal instead.
It doesn't really matter to me. Obama has more intelligence in his turds than Marco and Rand combined.

(6,057 posts)It's quite obvious that they're trying to win over the Latino vote while maintaining their racist tea party base.
Lots of luck with that!

(10,893 posts)Pretty much all the other side will do is criticize whatever the President says. They've been at it for 4 years and counting. Nothing new.
