Obama to propose pay hike for federal workers

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

President Obama plans to propose a 1% pay hike for civilian federal workers in his budget proposal for 2014.

The White House's Office of Management and Budget officials briefed federal labor leaders late Friday on the proposed pay hike.

Federal pay has been frozen for more than two years. A 0.5% pay hike is scheduled to go to civilian federal workers in late March. That pay hike was delayed when President Obama extended the existing pay freeze a few months to give lawmakers time to come up with a budget deal.

Union leaders were elated to hear the news.

"After all that federal workers have sacrificed the past three years, they have earned a raise. I repeat, they have earned a raise," said William R. Dougan, president of the National Federation of Federal Employees.

Congress would still have to approve the pay hike. In the meantime, House Republicans have plans to consider legislation that would extend the current freeze on federal pay through the end of this year.

1%? How about a more realistic 3% to 5%? That 1% won't even cover their yearly increase in their health insurance.
This pay raise that actually isn't, is part of the reason the 'recovery' isn't going very well. This is the same faulty thinking that is being applied to Social Security. And with the same effect, a stagnate economy on main street.
While out an about last night, we noticed a hardware store, closed and vacant. They were open last week. More people sucked down the drain, to swell the unemployment numbers.

I don't even think this is going to be doable, but at least the effort is being made.

Hours before the highly publicized vote on the fiscal cliff, the House passed another measure on Jan. 1 that would have kept federal employees’ pay frozen. Lawmakers backed the Congressional Pay Freeze and Fiscal Responsibility Act (H.R. 6726), which would prohibit a 2013 pay adjustment for federal employees and members of Congress, as called for by President Obama in a Dec. 27 executive order. The measure passed 287 to 129.

Many agencies are stretched to the breaking point.. But then again, wasn't that the whole purpose of the "drown it in the bathtub" crowd?

The GOP wants to destroy government by driving away solid employees who serve the public. They also desire an end to middle-class living for all working people.
