Al Gore: Fix the filibuster, talk about climate change, ensure privacy online

Salon exclusive: The former V.P. derides the profit-driven media and worries about drones and online privacy

BY AL GORE

Excerpted from "The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change"

More than 1,800 years ago, the last of Rome’s “Five Good Emperors,” Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, wrote, “Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.” His advice is still sound, though soon after his reign the Roman Empire began the long process of dissolution that culminated in its overthrow 300 years later.

Arming ourselves with the “weapons of reason” is necessary but insufficient. The emergence of the Global Mind presents us with an opportunity to strengthen reason-based decision making, but the economic and political systems within which we implement even the wisest decisions are badly in need of repair. Confidence in both market capitalism and representative democracy has fallen because both are obviously in need of reform. Fixing both of these macro-tools should be at the top of the agenda for all of us who want to help shape humanity’s future.

Our first priority should be to restore our ability to communicate clearly and candidly with one another in a broadly accessible forum about the difficult choices we have to make. That means building vibrant and open “public squares” on the Internet for the discussion of the best solutions to emerging challenges and the best strategies for seizing opportunities. It also means protecting the public forum from dominance by elites and special interests with agendas that are inconsistent with the public interest.

It is especially important to accelerate the transition of democratic institutions to the Internet. The open access individuals once enjoyed to the formerly dominant print-based public forum fostered the spread of democracy and elevated the role of reason and fact-based public discourse. But the massive shift in the last third of the twentieth century from print to television as the primary medium of communication stifled democratic discourse and gave preferential access to those with wealth and power. This shift eclipsed the role of reason, diminished the importance of collective searches for the best available evidence, and elevated the role of money in politics — particularly in the United States — thereby distorting our search for truth and degrading our ability to reason together.

I agree with the content I am just not sure that Al is in any position to complain about the "profit-driven media" seeing how he sold out last year to avoid Tax hikes in 2013.

2. Do you even understand what he means when he says profit driven media?

Profit driven media is media done for ratings and the money that it brings to corporations or billionaire owners. It's Murdock style media and the gossip rags, where what he wants is what gets talked about, whether it's fact based or not. It's not for serving the best interest of the most people. So therefore the stories that get on the air are the sensationalistic ones. OJ trial, Michael Jackson's latest facelift, the disappearance of the blonde girls, the Tea Party as some viable and legitimate group, opinions treated as if they have the same importance as facts.

The fact that Gore made a profit selling the station has nothing to do with how the media was or will be conducting stories. Current was fact based and Al Jazeera is one of the best news organizations out there.

I was just commenting on the term "profit driven media" except for public or government owned media most media is "profit driven" even MSNBC as well as Current, there is nothing wrong with making a profit it would have been great if Air America had made a profit. I agree that the truth is the important matter here not whether a profit is made.

5. From The N.Y. Times January 2, 2013

"Mr. Gore and his partners were eager to complete the deal by Dec. 31, lest it be subject to higher tax rates that took effect on Jan. 1, according to several people who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly."

http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/02/al-jazeera-said-to-be-acquiring-current-tv/?ref=todayspaper

The article goes on to say that the deal was not signed until the 2nd of Jan. 2013 so he may not have been able to save on taxes after all.

I don't hold it against him though, I think I would have tried to accomplish the same goal.

7. I agree there is nothing wrong with wanting to book a profit

Only when one lies to do it like Fox news and I never knew Current to lie. Profit is not the problem how one makes the profit is the real issue, and I have no issue with Al Gore on this.
