The Democrats' War to Win Women Voters

The Democrats' War to Win Women Voters

Lilly Ledbetter, move over. Democrats have a new line of attack to pit women against Republicans

By Beth Reinhard

Lilly Ledbetter, move over.

Debate over the Violence Against Women Act in Congress is refueling the successful “war on women” attacks waged against the Republican ticket in 2012, as Democrats seek to gin up the women’s vote in key Senate, House and gubernatorial races.

After House Republicans narrowly carried female voters in 2010 for the first time since 1982, Democrats vowed never to let the gender gap erode again. President Obama’s 2012 campaign unleashed an unprecedented media blitz touting his supporting for abortion rights, Planned Parenthood and the Lilly Ledbetter Act, which makes it easier for women to sue for equal pay. Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney with an 11-point advantage among women.

Now Democrats are confronting a challenging 2014 election environment, knowing that presidents usually lose members of their party during the midterm vote of their second term. So they are seizing on GOP resistance to reauthorizing the domestic violence bill in an effort to continue to brand the Republican Party as anti-woman.

“When we announced our top ten GOP targets, we promised a comprehensive plan to expose their out-of-touch behavior. First step? The Violence Against Women Act,” read the missive Thursday from House Majority PAC, a Democratic super PAC trying to wrest control of the House. Similar e-mail blasts have come this week from UltraViolet, a new liberal group headed by former MoveOn.org leaders, and from Barbara Buono, the New Jersey Democrat challenging Republican Gov. Chris Christie. Another Democratic super PAC, American Bridge, hit Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for his vote against VAWA just hours before he delivered the Republican Party’s response to the State of the Union speech on Tuesday.

if you're a woman IMHO. Democrats aren't always perfect on womens issues, of course, but nobody in the Democratic Party has introduced any "ultrasound" bills and/or tried to make them a "priority" or done anything really wacky like inviting a fetus to "testify".

I would think that, given what we have seen of the Republican Party since 2011, it should be pretty obvious as to which party women voters should trust.

but it's even more the case when it comes to women IMHO. Having a rich husband and living a swanky lifestyle- or a severely cloistered one influenced largely by fundamentalist "Christianity"- seems to be about the only female demographics for whom voting Republican makes any sense. Otherwise, I don't get it.

Poor little thing. They are so beholden to their masters (ALEC, et al), they can't burn bridges fast enough.

Income inequality, health care, education, your right to control your own body and destiny. To name just a few. A woman voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Col. Sanders.
I once got into a discussion of "why are you a liberal?" Simple answer: I'm female.

I think of how glad I am to vote democrat. Though I don't care much for the idea of abortion, I never put down any woman who considers it. And there is nothing wrong with Planned Parenthood. I wish they would leave us women alone.
