Republican lawmakers are furious with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for backing questions about gun ownership during kids' check-ups.
The practice is common among doctors, who argue it is vital to ensuring children's safety at home. President Obama has vowed to protect doctors' right to ask.
.......
"It's not their business," said Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), a member of the House Judiciary Committee. "It's like asking, 'Do people pray in your home? Do they voice opinions contrary to the (Obama) administration?'"
.......
"Doctors have no business inquiring of patients whether they are choosing to exercise their constitutional rights," NRA spokeswoman Jacqueline Otto said in a statement Friday. "When a child is brought to a doctor, it is to seek their expertise in pediatrics, not firearms ownership."

(16,986 posts)...if they asked patients about firearms, King has the wrong end of the persecution stick, not that that's surprising. Often enough bullies and other manipulators put on a show of being victims themselves.

The federal Affordable Care Act Obamacare prohibits the federal government from using patient medical records to compile a list of gun owners. Thats as it should be. However, in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre President Obama issued an executive order clarifying that the health care law does not prohibit doctors from asking their patients about guns in their homes.
Nor should it. But thats what Floridas 2011 Firearm Owners Privacy Act, dubbed the docs and Glocks bill, attempted to do. An early version of the legislation called for imprisoning doctors up to five years and fining them up to $5 million for asking questions about guns. Before the bill became law, those penalties were reduced to a $10,000 fine and loss of medical license. Also, an exception was made for doctors who believed that their questions about guns were relevant to a patients care or safety basically, a giant loophole that neutered the legislation.
Nevertheless, a federal judge overturned the law on the grounds that it violated doctors First Amendment free-speech rights and didnt restrict citizens Second Amendment firearms rights.
