Newt Gingrich said on ABC's "This Week" roundtable that Mitt Romney's campaign was sunk by remarks calling for "self-deportation" of undocumented immigrants and potraying 47 percent of Americans as dependent on government.
"I (think) that and the 47 percent comment were fatal," said Gingrich, who Romney defeated in the primary.

(8,224 posts)They do enjoy deluding themselves with "failed candidates". They really like to think Romney had a chance and if it were not for a couple of personal failings, would now be President.
Not a single one of them ever had a serious shot. This was going to be a 4 to 5 percent losing race, with the possibility of going to a 7 to 9 percent loss if they had chosen worse. Romney did as well as they could have done.
The comments Newt brings up would have been blown off as mistakes except that they reinforced what the majority already believed to be true. The reason they did damage is because the majority was ready to believe this about any republican, and there it was in bold. The problem was and remains that people are still just as ready to believe it at the first sign. Republicans dug this hole and no one over there is backfilling it.

(489 posts)This loathsome being is one of the many, many Republican leaders who are deluding themselves as to why the President won reelection, why the Democratic Party gained in the Senate and made at least some headway in the House.
They keep grasping at the hollow reeds that grow tall in every election, especially in our current state of 24/7 media churn. Those remarks did, no doubt, hurt Romney, but did not decide the election. Neither did the hurricane, or any other alibi they have offered.
The Republican Party is bleeding because no one in it has the guts to call out the Tea Party loonies who are driving their bus over the cliff, or to actually attempt to govern.
