Don't be cruel.

There is a group of people in this country that
don't want to be countrymen. They want to be
Americans, but not countrymen of all the rest of
us. These people have prospered here, many of
them the product of generations of prosperous
Americans that have been integral to the fabric of
this nation. They have enjoyed their sucesses
because of the virtues of this form of
government, it's endorsed economic system and
it's ample population . Business was possible in
America and America prospered.
Now that there are too many people in this
country and a percentage of those are drains on
society the group that I'm talking about are
whipping the rest of us a little harder. They don't
really want to remain countrymen, certainly not
with the poor or working classes and not even so
much with the American Minor Aristocracy. A
great portion of their wealth is dispersed
worldwide, as are their direct and indirect labor
forces, so there is no real threat to their fortunes
if things go to hell in the U.S. for a decade or so.
These Americans see themselves as truly the Best
Americans.
A pity for the rest of us, the Lesser Americans,
that we won't ever know what it's like to be one
of them.
Somehow we've hung in there though. As long as
we were still allowed to be proud of America and
work our butts off to survive we have tolerated
and been tolerated.
Until now.
This is like the most elaborate game of Dungeons
and Dragons (with a game of RISK being played
simultaneously) that has ever been. The authors
of this fantastic reality have created such a lush
landscape, included such important elements from
previous scripts, sanctified such emotional
preoccupations and villified so many compassionate
emotional efforts that the Lessor of us have
bought in wholesale. Me. You. Wholesale. It IS
reality for us, the only one we're ever likely to
know.
It's not that I want them to quit or go away. I
just don't want them to be so cruel. I don't even
feel like they're being particularly cruel to me.
They certainly are cruel, just not specifically to
me.
No, they're being far far more cruel to their
minions. The lickspittle also rans, no different
from me or perhaps you, but flawed in one way
or another. Apologizing for the gluttonous
incomes and outsorcing of labor. Arguing that
taxes shouldn't be raised on anyone. Selling their
own retirement entitlements for an illusion of
responsible government spending while our wars
still drain the treasury. Temporarily Embarrassed
Millionaires.
I know that my side is getting played too. I know
that my votes have gone to unapologetically lazy
political whores. I know that I have been
idealistic. Up until this administration I thought
that I could at least count on votes from
Democrats in Congress, if not great legislation.
During the first half of this administration's term,
when great legislation was being bandied about the
supermajority splintered. The moment was lost,
because it had to be. This drama must be allowed
to continue to play out, like that game. Wins and
losses, battles and wars and crusades.
It is a pity that no one will ever know how it ends.
