2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHarry Reid is tougher on Dianne Feinstein than he is on Mitch McConnell and repugs.
Reid does nothing on filibuster reform and quashes Feinstein's Assault Weapons Ban legislation.
He needs to go.

(1,301 posts)...since Feinstein was one of the few Democratic senators who declined to support filibuster reform. Still, when I heard Harry Reid addressing this, and taking for granted that they would need 60 votes, it made me sick.
Way to be good institutionalists, Harry and Dianne!

(11,464 posts)Instant gratification sucks, because 5 minutes later one wants more.
Long term permanent change is the long term goal. Cross every T, dot every i and make sure it can't be overturned.
2 people leave NJ driving south to Florida.
The hotrod showoff zooms forward weaving lane to lane
550 miles later, at the Carolina border, one get tired and one needs to hit the can, so one pulls into the rest stop to use the facilities, buy a cold DIET soda, stretch the legs on a little walk and then much to ones amazement, you look at the guy next to you
and you think WTF, there is that hotrod showoff, 10 hours later, at the exact same place as I am
then you leave and arrive in Florida
Funny thing is, the hotrod showoff got 3 traffic tickets speeding and limped into Florida three hours afterwards.
Dot the i, cross the T's.

(11,464 posts)Better strategy is to vote out the house members as nothing can happen without the house
anyhow.
Support the 800 Mayors against Guns and remove the NRA from blackmailing candidates.
Shame of it all is the 35 people killed/ over 100 wounded every single day.
More people whine about drones, but in just a few months, more people are killed by bullets
than all the drone collateral deaths in history.

It wasnt cowardice that killed the assault weapons ban. It was five Democratic senators who opposed the measure that forced it to be dropped from the Senate guns bill.
The assault weapons ban will be given an up or down vote as an amendment, but not included in the final Senate bill designed to limit gun violence. Many on the left will direct their rage at Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) or the entire Democratic caucus, but the reality is that the assault weapons ban is not in the final bill because five Senate Democrats opposed it.
Bloomberg reported back in January that, The five Democratic senators from traditionally pro-gun states who have expressed skepticism about the bill are Max Baucus and Jon Tester of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Independent Senator Angus King of Maine, who caucuses with Democrats, also said he opposes a ban.

(39,171 posts)look at the Senate Dems from pro-gun conservative states that are up for reelection in 2014 - Alaska, Montana, Arkansas, South Dakota, New Mexico, Virginia, Louisiana, and North Carolina come immediately to mind.
Most, if not all, ran on pro-gun platforms.
Feinstein could not get 40 votes - there are 53 Dems in the Senate. Do the math.

(2,062 posts)Its a back and forth society we live and work in. Right now, nothing seems to be getting done in DC, why? the attempt at bipartisanship. If and when the Democrats regain both houses again, things will develop, but this knife cuts both ways. Remember what it looks like now, because one day, there will be unfortunately, an all Republican House and Senate, and then, that's the day the Affordable Care Act goes bye bye, taxes go almost missing for the rich, SS and Medicare goes to near death, if not to death, and we middle-classers are left holding the bag.

(37,648 posts)that idea was controversial among a lot of people at the time. But most Americans are in favor of the assault weapons ban. And what harm to put it in the bill and force people to vote on the bill and have their vote on the record? This way, they don't have to choose.
