Even if there is a hero worship culture. We don't know that no one stood up over the years. We don't know because obviously some bullies took the power and used it to their advantage, be it the advantaged parents, the coaches, or the stars of the football team.

We do know that this isn't the first time they raped because they brag about it and because other girls have ventured out to tell their stories. We don't know that when a girl said something in the past she and her parents weren't punished in some social way. I don't put it past the influential parents of those boys to threaten livelihoods or ruin. This incident wasn't born in a vacuum where nothing like this has happened before.

There may be a lot of people there who know the media will eventually go away and they might believe that the same culture will just continue after our attention gets pulled somewhere else.

This article is like blaming the people of Iraq because Saddam Hussein was their murderous dictator.

More like blaming people for allowing Saddam Hussein to become their dictator. And then pretending not to have done so later.

you're saying that dictators are there because the people allow them to be there. How is that? Saddam rose through the ranks of his Baath Party who assassinated another dictator from a different party who had taken power by killing the ruling king. His rise was done through assassinations and consolidating power into the Baath party.

His so-called elections were a total fabrication. Sure the people of Iraq voted, because they were forced to for show. He always 'won' by 97% of the vote.

Do you really believe normal people going about their existence business 'allowed' him to be in power while he had any and all dissenters tortured and killed?

By allowing rape to go unpunished for (literally) generations, the people of Steubenville have allowed rape culture to dictate their actions. And by remaining silent and allowing the pro-rapists to speak for them at this time, they are perpetuating it.

isn't something I'm comfortable with. We don't know that no one spoke out do we, because the media pretty much covers only the juicy stuff it chooses to cover.
