(90,061 posts)He runs these dog-and-pony shows, over and over. It purports to be an investigation, but it is really a PR/advertising campaign and fund-raising vehicle.

(53,410 posts)He started the recall of Gov. Gray Davis in California. That gave us, not him, but Schwartzenneger as governor. Though Izza would probably have been worse.

(54,384 posts)The recall of Davis was started by Dick Cheney and Ken Lay in a DC meeting. They jacked up energy prices artificially in California, created an energy "crisis" in the state when there was none, and then started a PR campaign saying it was the fault of Davis alone. They figured by installing a Republican governor in California, they could redistrict away, and finally grab the state's 54 electoral votes for themselves. They must have gone apeshit when Schwarzenegger actually thought he was supposed to do the job for real, instead of only doing whatever Cheney told him to.
By jumping on the bandwagon, Issa obviously figured it was his divine right to become governor. He has been extremely pissed ever since that he was passed over for the job, and he is looking to get back by destroying anyone he can. His petty vindictive antics have fooled no one, and Bonehead has been in no hurry to hold Issa up as a shining example of what he thinks is an ideal committee chairman.

I remember following the story helplessly in rage as it unfolded, and my minor glee that Arnie didn't turn out to be the obedient tool that Cheney thought he was going to be. If Cheney had known that, he would have done everything in his power (and probably successfully) to make sure that Issa became their candidate for governor. It would have been more of an uphill battle in the election against Bustamante, but the tide was definitely with them in those days.
