The first lady shuts down a protester and triumphs over rudeness

Michelle Obama’s heckler win

The first lady shuts down a protester and triumphs over rudeness

BY MARY ELIZABETH WILLIAMS

When Michelle Obama declared last summer at the Democratic National Convention that “At the end of the day, my most important title is still ‘mom in chief,’” she was not kidding around. Case in point – the impromptu lesson in manners she gave a heckler Tuesday evening.

As the New York Times reports, Mrs. Obama was speaking before a group of approximately 200 supporters at a Democratic fundraiser in a private home in northwest Washington when she was interrupted by a protester. But when the woman, later identified as Ellen Sturtz, a member of the LGBT rights group GetEQUAL, shouted for the president to “issue an executive order barring federal contractors from discriminating against employees based on sexual orientation or gender identity,” the first lady wasn’t having it. She reportedly left her place at the lectern and moved toward Sturtz, saying, “One of the things I don’t do well is this.” And then, quite well, she said, “Listen to me, or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving. You all decide. You have one choice.” With that, the crowd began shouting for Mrs. Obama to stay put, and Sturtz was escorted out, still yelling and calling herself “a lesbian looking for federal equality before I die.”

For a woman whose etiquette is not always perfection, Michelle Obama’s sense of decorum is flawless. And the first lady’s response had a firm conviction that’s familiar to many parents. It was the determined tone of a woman who, swear to God, will turn this car around RIGHT NOW if you can’t control yourselves. I don’t know where Sturtz went after her tussle, but I’d have instinctively gone straight to my room.

In a press release today, GetEQUAL quotes Sturtz, who they say “interacted with the First Lady.” She explains her actions by saying, “I simply couldn’t stay silent any longer.” And she did manage to draw attention to the issue. But she did it by being rude and boorish, so where’s the satisfaction in that?

Wed Jun 5, 2013, 06:07 PM
Jun 2013

The heckling happened a bit after 6 p.m. under a white tent in the backyard of the residence of Karen Dixon and Nan Schaffer in Northwest DC. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, also was in attendance at the event, which benefits the DNC.

The incident came hours after White House press secretary Jay Carney reiterated the president’s focus being on legislation, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, that would ban most private employers from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, and not the proposed executive order

Remember when everyone wanted Obama to sign an EO regarding DADT - but he wanted legislation instead.

Obama waited for Congress to pass legislation and although it took longer everything turned out for the better.

Legislation is harder to repeal than an EO.

Like many of the "activists", you seem all to ready to let Congress off the hook. I remember in the bad old days when Bush was roundly criticized here for governing through signing statements & executive orders, to get around Congress. I'm absolutely gobsmacked at the number of instances where "liberals" are calling on this POTUS to "issue an executive order" when the issue affects them personally.

They wont work with the President when it comes to this. Sign an executive order and make sure we keep the White House and take control of congress.

You probably would have whined when Truman used an executive order to desegregate the military or Johnson used an executive order for affirmative action.

18. 44 to reverse 43's executive orders

President-elect Barack Obama is expected to move swiftly to reverse executive orders regarding torture of terror suspects, the military prison at Guantanamo Bay and other controversial security policies, sources close to his transition said, in dramatic gestures aimed at reversing President Bush’s accumulation of executive power.

Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) said he’s been informed that President Obama will support his proposed legislation to make public some opinions from the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel, which issued some of the Bush Administration's most sweeping claims of executive power. Obama also has promised to limit President Bush's practice of using "signing statements" to amend legislation.

"Every day we get indications that they're serious about reversing the abuses of the Constitution," Feingold, a harsh Bush critic, told Politico. Feingold said he thinks Obama is likely to issue executive orders rapidly reversing Bush policies, and others have indicate that those will likely cover the interrogation and detention of terror suspects, and keeping the records of past presidents secret.

She has hurt her cause by essentially setting fire to a bridge to someone that was willing to help the cause. Getting the whole pie at the same time usually doesn't happen. Obama will likely be the better person just like his wife by not punishing their group.

is the refusal to follow unjust laws. This was not civil disobedience - it was pure rudeness.

Did Gandhi yell at non-elected figures? Did King? You elevate what this woman did far beyond what it deserves. She was a loudmouthed jerk who did nothing to assist her cause.

Every public or even semi-public appearance by notable people should not be a free-for-all for self-aggrandizing assholes to hijack the occasion.

It required unbelievable amounts of dignity and inner strength for people in the civil rights movement to NOT scream or fight back. Of that I am sure.

They exposed how cruel and unjust the system was.

They showed that no one can take away your dignity.

You have to give that away yourself.

"I believe in vigorous debate and fighting with all the passion we have for the issues that matter. And that is not possible when we are selfish, self-appointed arbiters of what the person in the front of the room with the microphone ought to be talking about. There is plenty to be pissed off about in this world. I’m in the Yes to Equal Rights, No to Rape camp too. I think that Rick Santorum actually looks better covered in a sparkly dusting of glitter. But the moment we play the “I just couldn’t help myself ” card we shut down meaningful conversation. Yelling at someone is not “interaction.” Sure, we get noticed, but it’s easy to get noticed. A no-nonsense mom like Michelle Obama could tell you that any 2-year-old in a WalMart can get noticed just by throwing herself on the floor of the sporting goods aisle. That doesn’t mean anybody is going to take her seriously."
