Speaking on the Senate floor this morning, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) offered what may be the most concise summary of conservative constitutionalism ever spoken America must rewrite the Constitution to force conservative outcomes because we the people consistently elect lawmakers who disagree with McConnell:
The time has come for a balanced budget amendment that forces Washington to balance its books. If these debt negotiations have convinced us of anything, its that we cant leave it to politicians in Washington to make the difficult decisions that they need to get our fiscal house in order. The balanced budget amendment will do that for them. Now is the moment. No more games. No more gimmicks. The Constitution must be amended to keep the government in check. Weve tried persuasion. Weve tried negotiations. Were tried elections. Nothing has worked.

Sadly, McConnells deeply authoritarian plan to take away our ability to choose how we will be governed is part of a much larger conservative agenda to strip American democracy of any meaning and force conservative governance upon the American people:
(more examples where "conservatives" would prefer to not have to deal with those pesky elections to get their way...)

Good thing modern Americans don't give a fuck either way, huh?

(32,097 posts)Republicans controlled congress when Clinton was president. If they all voted against it a budget could not have gotten through congress.

(27,461 posts)the Democratic legislation that was signed into law in August of 1993 didn't get rid of the 1993 deficit. Ergo, Newt Gingrich was the one that balanced the budget. If that's all the GOP has, then have at it.

(32,097 posts)That doesn't matter to some people as long as they are making their point. I think that points are stronger when they are accurate.

(27,461 posts)I happen to believe that 1993 legislation led to the good economy of the following years, one effect of which was the elimination of the deficit.
You don't have to agree of course, but the fact that you cited the 1993 deficit as an argument against it tells me that you are not being serious. No one, regardless of their feelings about that law, could expect it to retroactively wipe out the deficit.
