The 51st State initiative - North Colorado

I was reading an article about the first council meeting about northern Colorado seceding from Colorado to become it's own state. This statement sticks out like a big, pus filled sore thumb:

"I have an issue with urbanites thinking it's up to them to know what's best," Fort Lupton resident Elena Metro said. "I don't know what's best for them, and I don't think they know what's best for me."

And these are the same people who vote loyally for the Republican party who want to criminalize abortion, ban gay marriage, defund and voucherize our public schools so state and federal money can help those people who want Jesus taught along side math and a the list goes on and on and on.

Why, WHY is hypocrisy so lost on conservatives?

1. I've come to the opinion that anytime one of these efforts gets going we should let them go.

Whether it's one like this in CO to eek out another state or it's TX wanting to become its own republic again. Let them go and good riddance. Let them turn their little corner of the world into the GOP/Tea Party utopia they believe it will be. I expect several of them will be begging to cross the border.

2. Can we trade off where N.CO can form a state and DC gets statehood?

I expect that N.CO will fail within a decade and vote to rejoin CO while DC continues to grow and gets two House seats by 2020.

(Net gain: 2 solidly Democratic Senate seats and 1 (or 2) solidly Democratic House seats.)

If it's 50/50 right now it would be 52/52 in the Senate.

While in the House it is currently 7 districts for all of Colorado. It appears that all of the counties that propose to be in the new state are entirely in the 4th district. About half of the 4th district is expressing that wish. With that as a guidance they would only have 1 congressional district.

A North Colorado would come out slightly ahead due to the congressional district representing fewer people.

5. Note where I said N.CO almost certainly fail and rejoin CO.

We'd keep the DC 2 Senate seats and 1 (or 2) House seats. Hence the net gain.

12. Why would it fail?

Do you think its economy would vanish? It would have most of the same demographics and resources as many of the western states and they aren't failing.

1.) It has an exceedingly-small tax-base. It's basically the size of RI with a population density to rival KY. Unless they intend to charge DC-level tax rates, they have no means to generate a sufficient revenue base to even achieve basic and expected services like governance, road maintenance, law enforcement, emergency services and education. Given, they may say they believe in small government...they don't believe in a government so small that a minor stove fire is a 100% certainty of structure-fire loss because they can't afford to put gas in the firetrucks and children go unschooled for lack of funds to hire teachers or even keep the heat on in the school. There's a reason the Western states are as large as they are...they would not function even well enough to sustain a minimal standard of living if they were the size of CT, RI, MD, NJ, MA, VT or NH. They need to be that big to encompass enough residents and revenues to be able to minimally-function.

I had four more but #1 is such a game-ender, there's no reason to go on to #2. It has as much chance of success as if I cut out my kidney, planted it in my vegetable garden and watered it in an effort to grow my own clone.

To answer your question though: Yes, the fact its economy would zero-line is one reason.

wells being built so close to schools and your backyard at an alarming rate.

GREELEY —From the spot where a drill rig will sink up to 33 new oil and gas wells, the red-and-yellow jungle gym of an elementary school is in easy sight — and the school's garden is even closer. Mineral Resources Inc. has received initial approval from the state to set up drilling operations about 750 feet from Frontier Academy elementary school.

"Greeley has always been a bit of a Wild West town," said Patricia Jolly, whose 10-year-old son attends the charter school. "And oil and gas is part of the city, but we've got to slow down, take more time; the oil isn't going anywhere."

In Greeley — which sits at the heart of Colorado's richest oil and gas play — wells and tanks sprout in parks, golf courses, residential developments and school grounds.

As drilling gets closer to Front Range communities, this northern Colorado city is being held out as a model of coexistence or a vision of what uncontrolled drilling will bring.

One response from some cities and counties has been to enact or consider drilling bans and moratoriums. It was Greeley that first tried to ban drilling in 1985.

9. They'll shut up soon enough about seceding after 2014 and even 2016
Sun Jul 28, 2013, 07:32 PM

I can't imagine the state house will stay democratic control through 2 elections. They certainly can't push through secession before 2016. Things will flip again in this predominantly red state. They might even be successful in getting a republican governor. If that happens, all the secession talk will disappear.

It's sour grapes. They think it's just and acceptable to ramrod their conservative agendas on the "urbanites" but as soon as they don't have legislative control and things happen that they don't like, then the pissing and whining starts. And instead of working to change things, they simply throw down their toys and stomp off. I could care less if the seceded. Then I could live in a state without tea bagging loons preaching and crusading their moral agenda.

i'd be in a border town if this went through and i don't think these fools actually understand everything that goes into being a state.
