I see it as a symbol of the class system in the south, which I experienced growing up there. Upper class whites heaped contempt on lower class whites (white trash), who then heaped their contempt on the blacks (even worse names) and so on. *sigh* I wish this phrase would be ditched from the language.

It is one of the reasons that poorer whites are much more likely to be racist. No one wants to be the bottom of the social totem pole.
