In my case I grew up "middle class"; we never really worried about being homeless or missing a meal, and I was able to go to the local junior college and even state university, but there was no money for luxuries. Never actually on food stamps but never really far away.

In a way I think the strength of this country *IS* the middle class. The rich really do not know the value of money, at least not what it means to be without it or having to make choices.

The truly poor are often equally disadvantaged as they sometimes never really learn how to handle it, make it work for them - at least that is my observation of many of the friends I have who grew up truly poor, they are bad at saving and budgeting even once they have a semi decent income.

Anyway, I think the President hit this one out of the park.

He did work at one point in college - selling those very expensive knives to all his parents friends. He won some award for selling the most knives. What a joke.

They broke up when my daughter was invited on a family vacation to Kennebunkport.
The rich kid met her at the airport in Boston and relayed to her a list of how she was to behave when she was with the family. She got on the next airplane home. I was so proud of her.

The sequel to this is that he wrote some books that became best sellers. He did that. He didn't make his fortune dumping people out of jobs, or driving good businesses over a cliff of debt. He didn't impoverish one single person with his own ambition.

People can connect at the cellular level with this man. Only blood-in-the-eye snarling right wingers cannot empathize because they are mentally ill or mentally midgets.

This is another reason why the Freepers hate him. He is not an elite, he had roughly the same opportunities as anyone else did and he made the most of them by working hard and graduating from a great school. He then worked hard to pay off his debt and now he became President. The Freepers are more jealous of people who came from similar backgrounds as they did, but achieved more, someone like R-Money they hate less because he is royalty and had a huge head start on them so it doesn't reflect poorly on them that he ended up wealthy, after all, how could Romney have ended up anything other than filthy rich?

They absolutely hate hate hate that Obama came from modest means and is the great American success story that they aren't. I don't think there is any doubt that Obama knows the value of a dollar and knows what a days work means. Romney cannot hide his privileged upbringing. He has never struggled, he has never known the value of a dollar, and I doubt if he's ever labored a day in his life.

Romney as his opposing candidate is the gift that keeps on giving.

Barry seems more like a guy I would have smoked a joint with, instead of a beer, back in the day. Is this is a bit of a puff piece saying the Prez. is "uniquely capable" of relating to people with humility?

Still, he's definitely got my vote. After all there really is no choice. I criticize him all the time but I do like that he is a regular guy, with life experiences that are very similar to mine.

And I'm hoping that gives him the motivation to fight for working class + middle class people all the time instead of bending over backwards to appease Wall Street banks and cutting shitty deals with the gop and persecuting weed smokers.

But I still like him for some reason even though the excitement and hope from his 2008 campaign is gone for me, replaced by more realistic expectations.

President Obama looks more and more like a decent, good man, who could do good for USA, if he ever got the chance.. The four first year have been hard for him - and it show.. But dam he is good... And hopefully will continue to be a good president the next 4 years after winning the election... I hope he is elected as the next president - as I believe mr Romney is a horrible choice for president, even if he was just to be president for four years... He could, and would do horrible thing, not just on the outside of US, but also inside the US.. He is maybe not that bad as GWB was - but dam he is close...

If I have had the possibility to vote in a US general election - I would have voted President Barack Hussein Obama without doubt... As I have not that possibility I hope at least to se the next president be Mr Obama, and not Romney... Not because he member of the LDS Church - mostly because I do believe him to be a clear and present danger pure and simple.. What US need today is not another BUSH clone.. What US need are persons, who is able to repair the horrible damage been made to the once republic, from foreign enemies, but also from enemies inside your own country... And you have a lot of the latter, who would try to damage US from inside - and not everyone of them bear turban or is muslims..
