Social Security is a promise we must keep. The money our grandmothers, grandfathers, widows and children rely on should not be used as bargaining chips in any debate. Moving towards the new benefit calculation for Americans receiving Social Security, known as chained-CPI, will cost those on Social Security an average of $650 a year. For millions who depend on Social Security, a loss that large could force them to choose between rent and health care, co-chairs Reps. Raul M. Grijalva (D-AZ) and Keith Ellison (D-MN) said in a statement.
Calculating benefits for Social Security beneficiaries with chained CPI isnt a reformits a benefit cut. Americans oppose cutting Social Security or shutting down the government to deny millions of Americans health care. They wont be bullied into changing their minds, and neither will we.

(12,041 posts)If it did happen I would be furious, but I have not seen anything to suggest Obama is going to give them anything on this one. He knows the precedent it would set if he caves, and giving away Social Security would be seen as one of the biggest caves in history. It would destroy his legacy and set a precedent for future hostage negotiations, I can be critical of Obama sometimes but I don't think he would do something like this in these circumstances.

(12,041 posts)It was wrong when he did it then, but the circumstances were different. There was no shutdown with a ransom attached.

(27,787 posts)Gets predicted here on DU every couple of months. Some on DU freak out. "OMG, Obama's going to cave!!!"
Folks run screaming.
Then .... nothing.
It'll be the same this time.
And then in a few months after the screaming dies down ... the death of social security will be predicted yet again. And the cycle will repeat. Just as it has since 2009.

(14,691 posts)NO. I'm just a few years from retirement and will need every cent of SS money coming to me. When it's used as a bargaining chip whether for show or God forbid for real, I do NOT enjoy it.
