Progressive Caucus worried Social Security cuts will be part of government shutdown deal

The Congressional Progressive Caucus on Thursday warned that cuts to Social Security could be put on the table as part of an eventual deal to end the government shutdown.

“Social Security is a promise we must keep. The money our grandmothers, grandfathers, widows and children rely on should not be used as bargaining chips in any debate. Moving towards the new benefit calculation for Americans receiving Social Security, known as chained-CPI, will cost those on Social Security an average of $650 a year. For millions who depend on Social Security, a loss that large could force them to choose between rent and health care,” co-chairs Reps. Raul M. Grijalva (D-AZ) and Keith Ellison (D-MN) said in a statement.

“Calculating benefits for Social Security beneficiaries with chained CPI isn’t a reform—it’s a benefit cut. Americans oppose cutting Social Security or shutting down the government to deny millions of Americans health care. They won’t be bullied into changing their minds, and neither will we.”

If it did happen I would be furious, but I have not seen anything to suggest Obama is going to give them anything on this one. He knows the precedent it would set if he caves, and giving away Social Security would be seen as one of the biggest caves in history. It would destroy his legacy and set a precedent for future hostage negotiations, I can be critical of Obama sometimes but I don't think he would do something like this in these circumstances.

President Obama made a significant contribution last week with the release of his proposed budget, in which he advocated a shift to so-called "chained" CPI to adjust spending and taxes for inflation.

You can read more here: http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2013/apr/17/what-is-chained-cpi-in-obamas-budget/

Or Google "Obama proposes Chained CPI" and you will get a butt load of links to choose from. The news is out there, you just have to look.

It was wrong when he did it then, but the circumstances were different. There was no shutdown with a ransom attached.

It is my only income. As of January, I am going to have to move to my son and his wife's house. Everything is becoming too expensive, especially food.

Gets predicted here on DU every couple of months. Some on DU freak out. "OMG, Obama's going to cave!!!"

Folks run screaming.

Then .... nothing.

It'll be the same this time.

And then in a few months after the screaming dies down ... the death of social security will be predicted yet again. And the cycle will repeat. Just as it has since 2009.

NO. I'm just a few years from retirement and will need every cent of SS money coming to me. When it's used as a bargaining chip whether for show or God forbid for real, I do NOT enjoy it.

That's where the congress as an equal branch of government comes in. I will continue to lobby via email/fax/phone every Democrat in congress to oppose it if indeed the elusive Grand Bargain ever sees the light of day.
