Al Franken Shames the GOP with a Letter from the Wife of a Disabled Veteran

Al Franken Shames the GOP with a Letter from the Wife of a Disabled Veteran

From the Senate floor today, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) urged Republican leaders in the House of Representatives to bring the Senate-passed clean CR to fund the government up for a vote since they have the votes to pass it. But most poignant was a letter he read from the wife of a disabled veteran who explained how the shutdown was hurting their family, but then begged him not to give in to delaying ObamaCare.

She wrote, ‘We would rather do without, than have you give in to delaying the Affordable Care Act. Please stand strong and do not let anyone change or delay this. We will sit tight without income while you work towards this.’

According to his prepared remarks, Senator Franken talked about his constituents urging him not to give in on ObamaCare, “Brenda Gregorich from Duluth wrote me on Wednesday about her husband, a disabled veteran, whose disability benefit is now further delayed due to the shutdown. She says – quote, ‘We would rather do without, than have you give in to delaying the Affordable Care Act. Please stand strong and do not let anyone change or delay this. We will sit tight without income while you work towards this.’”

Having worked for the VA just last year and having been through the system myself...

likely this vet has already been waiting forever and would have no matter what. There is a VA website showing the status of all claims, overdue times and all:

http://www.vba.va.gov/REPORTS/mmwr/index.asp

I think the St Paul VARO is average 127 days overdue at the very least.

I don't know if the shutdown makes any substantial difference. I was a VSR (in PHX) and so many people working there are so lazy it is pathetic. The wait time would be much less if it were not for lazy people. I left for that very reason- most co-workers were very non-productive. There were / are some good ones there, but they are a minority.

Curious what the vet's claim is for.

That is truly the puke thought. I believe the military considers them OFU - One Fodder Unit. THey are now useless eaters.

any credible source that lists what veteran's benefits Republicans want to cut? I am on a few mailing lists from some vet orgs and no one has been bitching about that. Maybe I'm missing something.

receiving benefits of various types. Nothing so far has been diminished to my knowledge.

Granted, I don't hang out at the VA or anything like that since I have to go to work, but I have yet to receive any propaganda from the VA or anywhere else for that matter stating something was on the chopping block.

I'll be the first to stand up and fight, but I have not heard anything.

If they could, they would have changed their behavior long ago. They are shame proof.
