Romney campaign aide claims auto bailout was Romney's idea
By Brendan Sasso - 04/28/12 01:28 PM ET

One of Mitt Romney's top advisers said Saturday that President Obama's decision to bailout Chrysler and General Motors was actually Romney's idea.

"{Romney's} position on the bailout was exactly what President Obama followed. I know it infuriates them to hear that," Eric Fehrnstrom, senior adviser to the Romney campaign, said.

"The only economic success that President Obama has had is because he followed Mitt Romney's advice."

The claim appears to be a shift from Mitt Romney's November 2008 op-ed in The New York Times, headlined, "Let Detroit go bankrupt."

Which is exactly what saved the auto industry. They are desperately trying to rewrite history. Fortunately we have documentation of his precise words.

"IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed."

This is a killer issue for Romney and his campaign knows it.

And the election is over.

They damn well know it. And there's a simple reason: it proves definitively that Romney's economic philosophy is purely and simply wrong. He's selling himself as some kind of economic genius next to Obama, but on one of the most important economic decisions of our time, Obama was correct and Romney was wrong, and it's obvious to anybody who looks at it. They have to obfuscate on this point for that very reason.

Romney is on record being gigantically and obviously wrong. They can try to spin it, but their spin is laughable.

10. Yes, and that is what they are afraid is going to happen.

Which is why they are trying to defuse it now so it has less effect on the election. I suspect the Obama campaign will low key the response and save this one for later for bigger impact.

16. Its interesting to note this is not the general Republican position on this issue.

Carly Fiorini just said on "This Week with George" that the bailout was totally wrong and her comment was backed up by the other Rs on the panel. The GOP is not as coordinated on issues as they used to be. That has been one of their strengths in the past.
