Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA) Set For Monday Night Vote

Employment Nondiscrimination Act Set For Monday Night Vote

WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told his Democratic caucus on Thursday that he will bring the Employment Nondiscrimination Act up for a vote on Monday, a senior Democratic aide told The Huffington Post.

Reid will file a procedural motion on Thursday evening to begin debate on the bill, setting up a Monday evening vote. The bill needs to get 60 votes to clear a procedural hurdle ahead of the final vote, and as of Thursday, 59 senators publicly support it. Meanwhile, Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), whose son is gay, said Tuesday he is "inclined to support" the bill.

Momentum behind the bill, which would ban workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, suddenly picked up this week. Sens. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who were the three remaining Democratic holdouts, all jumped aboard in the past few days.

I mean it's going to make great campaign fodder...but I'd rather have a law.

But at least this puts the Democratic members of the Senate on the record as supporting this. Granted yes, the majority of the LGBT community that vote already vote Democratic, but this is something to "reward" them for lack of a better way to put it. It beats just saying that we can't pass this, so we aren't going to try to push for greater equality for the LGBT community. I think it can help to show that Democrats aren't just taking their votes for granted, especially given how long it took the Democrats to get behind same sex marriage and not say things like there's an election coming so we can't do this.

Additionally it shows that even though Congress as a whole isn't able to get stuff done, that Democrats are actually trying to move things forward. The House Republicans have done pretty much nothing but try to repeal the ACA. They aren't even trying to do something, just tear other things down.

I like that it also shows that Harry Reid, much like Nancy Pelosi is able to get their caucus on board with things. Look at how utterly incompetent John Boehner is at that. Does Joe Manchin from West Virginia think this is going to play well at home? With all due respect to West Virginia, probably not. But he got on board with the bill anyway.

I hate to be a killjoy....

I don't think it will get 60 and even if it does the House probably won't even bring it up for a vote. I'd be shocked if it passes both sides.

You don't score any political points from flip flopping.

We've got some dead weight in our caucus that hardly support progressive causes.
