According to Ken Burns' website, Learn The Address, the president was asked to recite one of the versions of the Gettysburg Address that does not include the phrase "under God."
The portion of the speech as President Lincoln gave it is:
"It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before usthat from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotionthat we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vainthat this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedomand that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

(52,314 posts)i think this is what passes for "republican philosophy" in a nutshell.
american political discourse has long been much less than it should be, but these days it is ludicrous.
i honestly feel terrible for young people today, growing up thinking this is normal.

(13,190 posts)She said the original Gettysburg address DIDN'T have under god in it and the President read the original address
There was only ever one.
An earlier version of the one eventually delivered didn't have the offending words in it.
It's not like there was an original which Lincoln, prior to actually delivering, amended.
Rather like quoting from a draft of one of Obama's books and calling it "the original", as opposed to the one delivered.
